hello all, i just thought i'd ask to see if anyone likes tennis? Wimbledon starts in a week, any tips?
Regarding Elena Dementieva... She's technically flawless. She's not intimidated. (Not even by Serena: Elena held match point against her in their semifinal last year at Wimbledon.) She just won her warm-up, in Sydney, I believe. Why couldn't she go all the way in singles? Yes, she's never won a grand slam championship, but Novotna didn't either until age 29. Elena is at 20 to 1, so five hundred bucks could get you ten grand. She will have to face Justine in the second round, but if she gets by (which I believe she will), it could boost her confidence even more. |

Wimbledon.................?
i'm having a guess at djokovic again, i think he will win another slam somewhere and hopefully i have a wager on it. As for the women, probably one of the williams' or henin, but hopefully someone else maybe wozniacki or dementieva if she is healthy.

Quite. I barely dare watch tennis these days - certainly with the sound up - in case the neighbours think I'm watching porn movies.

Nobody gave grunts like Monica Seles. It was almost a cross between a grunt and a shriek.

My current favorite women's player is Jelena Jankovic, though she never wins a tourney. I love when she does the splits going for the side forehands!

Random Thoughts
I'd say keep an eye on Francesca Schiavone and particularly Samantha Stosur. Sam is an amazon woman whose game should translate very well onto the grass. Also still like Elena Dementieva, provided she's recovered sufficiently from the thigh injury.
Now, about all the "grunting"... First of all, the term is no longer adequate to describe the violent 'I just got stabbed' shrieks that are so ubiquitous on the women's side. Maria Sharapova sounds like Anna Netrebko warming up in an eight by ten foot practice room with no sound proofing - every time she strikes the ball. I guess that's appropriate, being that she's such a diva. Monica was as quiet as a church mouse compared to Sharapova, come on now. Serena Williams basically admitted that she uses her ear piercing jungle shrieks in order to intimidate her opponents. But that stuff has become so commonplace, so trite, so obvious that it doesn't work anymore (if it ever did). On the contrary, I've often thought about how much extra valuable energy is sapped from a player who, for whatever reason, is compelled to perform such excessive mind-numbing vocalizations throughout the course of a match. Roger Federer and Justine Henin are two brilliant champions who make not a sound during their matches. From my perspective, this only adds to their greatness. |
