J. Stephen Hicks was a US-based photographer, d. 2013-02-06 aged 58, obit.
His work featured regularly in Penthouse from 1984-03. Some other earlier credits: Piper Smith as Carmine in Knave 12-07 1980; Fiesta 14-08 1980; Oui 1980-12 & 1981-07; Swank 1981-08; Genesis 1981-10; Gallery 1983-05. He has just a few [but now growing list of] aliases including some possible earliest credits:

Stolen Valor: Bob Veze
I have been working on Fred Enke's biography for four years and during my research I have gathered a number of tidbits along the way and one has been this 'Bob Veze' enigma. I will mention some information I have found but will try to be discreet as possible since I rather post the bio in full rather than in parts.
Fred Enke died February 25, 1977 from a rare genetic disorder. He was known to use the pseudonyms Olivia, as well as his own name. There was a reason to this but will be explained in his bio. The pseudo Olivia was based on the name of the model he was living with from 1975 to his death. I have discovered through my research that Enke's work was used after he had passed by others for financial gain. I call this "Stolen Valor". It should be noted that Enke's work was considered by these individuals to be so above par that they put their own name to it as the artist. One was Nat Fisch. Fisch was actually Enke's agent who had privy to his work. Enke's earlier work from his days at CLUB magazine 1974 -76 was published in 1977 in a number of American magazines, i.e. Nugget and Stag, as well as Canadian Elite giving credit to the following bylines; QUARK, QUARK Graphics, Bob Veze - QUARK Graphics. I am confused because is this the same photographer who submitted work under his own name Bob Veze? If it is, how was he able to obtain Enke's work? According to Seduction of Venus by Bill Hedley, there is a photographer named Bob Veze who studied painting and graphic design at Kent State University, Ohio, and then studied film at the University of Southern California. He worked for a number of advertising agencies doing photography and graphic design including a stint as graphics consultant for Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas. There is a Bob Veze listed in the IMDb directing some movies but died in 2008. Veze was the boyfriend of Laurie Smith, adult movie star from the 80s. Examples of The Sensuous Bathtub: Bob Veze - QUARK Graphics submissions. This was from Enke's pictorials Last Straw: Men Only 41_01 and Be-Troughed: CLUB USA FEB 1976. Enke's work was not the only one stolen. Siwer Ohlsson, photographer for RUSTLER magazine in the early seventies, had his work plagiarized, also. In RUSTLER, a pictorial by Ohlsson titled Unbridled Lust was featured in CAVALIER MAR 1979 under the name A Pony Tale. This was allegedly done by Bob Veze. The only difference is Ohlsson is still alive and doing photography. Perhaps he has yet to notice the plagiarism. I'm sure I will discover more as I go along but I can say for sure, Barry Vincent is not aka Bob Veze.

I have here created a short thematic thread based upon the pictorial setting with a very particular semi-circular window in the background. The first three posts are the same model in the same setting, and photog. respectively by Roger Addison, Peter Flodqvist, and Peter Flodquist, so I think those three names are probably all AKAs for the same photographer.
Posts 5-7 in that thread are again all of one (different) model, Nini Larssen, and also all from one setting with photog. credits of Basil Crawford-Smith & Sascha Alexander, so I think those are also AKAs for the same photographer. One small pic. in post 4 also looks like the same setting, with a different (third) model called Annik. The intriguing thing is that all seven posts look like they're from the same setting with only changes to the furniture and accessories in the foreground and the colour of the blinds in the background--besides changes in the model, that is. At first I wondered if this might be a room in a building e.g. perhaps a motel but I'm now more inclined to think it's just a set in a studio? So, does that mean that: Peter Flodqvist | Peter Flodquist | Roger Addison = Basil Crawford-Smith | Sascha Alexander? The name Basil Crawford-Smith first appears in Mayfair 18-11, 1983-11 and recurs through to 26-13, 1991. There's also a few instances of Basil Cranford-Smith. The name Peter Flodquist or Peter Flodqvist appears in Mayfair 12-05, 1977-05 and recurs through Mayfair 32-13, 1997 and beyond. It also appears in other mags. such as Fiesta, Gallery, Genesis, High Society, Hustler, Knave, Swank, etc. There is also a photog. credited as Christer Flodqvist from Mayfair 11-07, 1976-07 through Mayfair 17-12, 1982-12, as well as in other mags. such as Club International (UK), Gallery, Genesis, Penthouse, Swank. edit: On the name Sascha Alexander there is also the video production studio called Sascha Alexander productions. Peter Flodqvist has been the subject of my investigation since before I knew who he was.
I ran into his work in 2001 when shoots of Eva Roberts, Jana Cova, Henriett Halipi, Edita Ungerova, Clara Oliver, Rachel, Claudia and others were found in various places. The style is similar to Viv Thomas, but not Viv's work. I have posted most of what I have in those model's threads. Peter and Christer were brothers. They shared a studio in Malmo Sweden. Another aka for Peter is Ulf Stjernbo. Here is a nice list of magazine work by Peter: http://anonym.to/http://oldmags.com/...eter-Flodqvist some instances from 1974 Last instance Gallery 2003 Many from Gallery There is some anecdotal evidence that Peter died in the late nineties or early 2000's and his photographs were sold to the highest bidder[s]. Notably to Viv Thomas who released numerous sets in the 4000 setnumber range while he was recuperating from throat cancer. That semi-circular window looks familiar. I have seen it in sets of Katalin Kiraly and Marketa Belonoha to recall two. I'll post what I find in your thread effy

Hans Larsson = Rupert Daines
Some more pics. with the familiar wall and tiles setting noted earlier and again credited to Hans Larsson, this time of Caroline [Taborrine] in Playmen (It), 1977-05, thanks to Fabrizio.
Also a cover from Yes (Es), 1977-06-30. Hans Larsson was also credited for this model's pictorials in: Gallery, 1977-03 as Babette Playmen (It), 1976-11 as Caroline Taborrine Related pictures featuring the red top, straw hat, and animal print sheet in the above set were published as Lois Hersh in Men Only 40-12, 1975-12 and credited to Rupert Daines, see here thanks to Cream Cheese. So I think that's fairly strong evidence that Hans Larsson is indeed = Rupert Daines. The cover of Cavalier, 1976-11 also shows a shot from the above animal print set. Rupert Daines was also credited for a different set of pics. of the above model as Molly in Club International (UK) 05-02, 1976-02. NB, there is a thread for this model here. A stray thing but note the red-and-white stripe top worn by Caroline Taborrine in the above post, & then this:
Brenda from an unnamed & undated Spanish mag. thanks to raval. Unknown from Frech (De?), 1976, thanks to smoerre-broed. Could just be a coincidence, I suppose, but it is a rather distinctive garment, not just an ordinary T-shirt. |

My guess, and I stress that it's pure speculation, is that if he died it was probably in 2005 or 2006, and Viv bought his back catalogue from his estate's executors when he realised he was going to be incapacitated for a period due to his cancer treatment. I think there are 69 sets in the VT archives that were shot by Peter. I've presented one picture from each below to help visualise his style and preferences. Most of them look underexposed, but that has nothing to do with the photographer and everything to do with the bozo who did the scanning at VT. Indeed, a strong theme from these pictures is how superb an eye for colour Peter had. You can see that in practically every set he'd taken trouble to coordinate the colours of the model's lingerie with the room artefacts (or vice versa). Other themes:
NB: IB rejected 5 images, so they're on IV. .

A little more on Hans Larsson aka Rupert Daines.
Annette Kirkwood in Penthouse, 1975-01, photog. by Hans Larsson, thanks to howmer. A different model but the exact same setting & chair. Yes, it looks like the top rail of the balcony is missing but I think it's just been (mostly) cropped. Something very like the grey rough plaster wall below also featured in Annette Kirkwood's pictorial. Christina (Chris) Caroline Cossens, claimed to be from Denmark, in Mayfair 10-07, 1975-07, photog. not credited, thanks to croitear. NB, although many Mayfair models were claimed to be from the UK when we have clear evidence they were not, I tend to find it slightly more believable when a mag. claims a model is "foreign"-born, although there is also the possibility for an "exoticism" angle rather than the more frequent "naturalisation" one. I think the above shows: a) Hans Larsson aka Rupert Daines perhaps began work in Denmark or continental Europe & b) some of his work was published in Mayfair even if not credited as such. edit: I've since found unrelated sets of Margaretha Akerberg from Lektyr (Swe) in 1971 here and Anita Fredin from Lektyr (Swe) no.41, 1972 here, both credited to Hans Larsson, which at least for now are the earliest known dates for his work. Larsson was also credited for covers & models in Genesis from 1973-09 & 1973-10, i.e. 2nd and 3rd issues of that mag. Last edited by effCup; August 13th, 2015 at 12:50 PM.. Reason: earlier dates |
