Notable Deceased Musician Of the Day

We have mounds of the minutes, ass of the hour, feet of the moment, asshole of the century-- but nothing about our favorite musicians who have passed.

Everyone can have one per day. Pick someone who is no longer with us that is still worthy of remembrance, even if you may not have thought about them since you were young (and dumb

).

This is not a 'insert name' sucks thread. Nor does it intend to invite needless slagging over anyone's talents and abilities.

The inaugural musician of this thread is --

Ronald "Pigpen" McKernan. (1945-1973)

Co-founded what became the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia. From the earliest days until his last show in 1972, Pig was the frontman of the Dead, the only one in the band that could get people up and moving.

Pig died early (27 club) but it was due to long-term alcohol abuse.. Pig loathed drugs and lived in constant fear of getting dosed.

He did love life.. he dated Janis Joplin... he just didn't know where to go when the Dead turned to acid. You can see in the pictures how thin he became as he slowly decimated himself.

RIP, Pig.

We are blessed to have recordings of the songs only you could do.

Phil Lynott (1949-1986)

Founding member, bassist, vocalist, and primary songwriter for the band Thin Lizzy.

The 1976 LP Jailbreak made Thin Lizzy a household name and to this day the album is featured on classic rock FM stations. By the early 80s, his drug use which complicated other physical problems forced Thin Lizzy to disband (1983). Three years later, Phil passed after an overdose and subsequent complications left him in a coma on a ventilator. He was 36.
