Nick Meyer and Herbert Ross are responsible for the resurrection of Sherlock Holmes out of Edwardian quaintness and into the late 20th century. A big part of of their insight is the idea that Holmes' character has a partly pathological component . . . you can certainly read that as a suggestion in Conan Doyle, but its this book and film that make Holmes a superhero for our time, a flawed and tortured genius. Thank Meyer's fictional Freud for that-- its the psychoanalytic angle that elevates Holmes character The New York Times has a good piece on the influence of this film "The Holmes behind the modern Sherlock" http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/26/mo...ck-holmes.html |

Blood Shot (2013)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1196124/ A strangely undeserved 2.9 from imdb as I really liked it A hard ass cop teams up with a vampire to try and stop Islamic terrorists planning to explode a nuclear weapon in New York. The humour is strained at times but I've seen a lot worse movies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptxMcN3kV1c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc_zMzFVMJ8 |

Pied Piper (1942)
Pretty rubbish; I was very surprised to read that Monty Woolley was Oscar-nominated for this shocking performance. The only good points are the child actors (young Roddy McDowell appears in this movie) and 19 year old Anne Baxter, who looks terrific and offers a solid and mature acting performance quite at odds with the rest of the adults. Monty Woolley over-acts monstrously and Otto Preminger is auditioning for Stingray or Thunderbirds. The film has a few good moments and a really pretty heroine, but thats about all.

The First Deadly Sin (1980) I like gritty cop movies from the 70s and 80s and was curious to see Sinatra's final starring role. Decently made film is never boring but it lacked a certain energy. Might have been Frank's underplaying of a NYC cop on the edge of retirement tracking a serial killer while dealing with a sudden trauma in his personal life. I may give this another look some day and perhaps appreciate more. 6/10 |

Severed Ties (1992)
Watched this last night......
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101368/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 .........on an old VHS tape found in a box at the back of the garden shed. Now if you're a fan of the old Re-Animator series of films then you'll like this movie as it's in the same vein and has a similar feel to it though to be honest the lead here, Billy Morrisette, is no Jeffrey Combs...... But what this film does have is a bunch of very weird but likeable characters, and really good turns from Elke Sommer and Oliver Reed no less.... I like this movie....Can't honestly call it a classic or even a minor one.....but should be a must see for fans of the genre... Had a bit of a google and apparently there's not that much out there about this film ....not released on DVD ???.....Would really love some feedback on this one as maybe it's a rare one these days.....???? IMDB gives it a 5.3 which is on purely technical terms probably right......but I'd give it a 7.0 mainly because there aren't that many movies in this genre that are this good

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) Ah, the days before rampant CGI. Action films from the 80s and earlier seem like a lost art. If anyone is keen on resurrecting it, look no further than MM2:TRW. Such intense, high octane set pieces with touches of humor and humanity thrown in for good measure. 9/10 |
