No any problem with output files on SolveigMM, only with some MKV (and write about it earlier). Since i DL movies from VOD paysite - SolveigMM is best progam for me for cutting various phone sex ads, parts of black screen and other video garbage.

it cuts without re-encoding without problems except for MKVs but still cuts them like this let's say you have a 10 minutes video (video.mkv), and you need a scene in the middle you end up with 3 pieces. video-01.mkv video-02.mkv video-03.mkv the scene you want is in 02. If you want the vid from the start to a point, you have of course only 2 pieces. from start until the point you mark and then another piece from there to the end. |

Anyvideoconverter (Free) works fine for me.
It will convert any format to any other, including MKV. At the same time it can remove subtiles, reshape/resize, chop off beginnings and ends (like the SWV trailers) etc. Best done on a second pass, it can then also manually: Remove "letterboxing/windowing" (black margins). Tweak brightness/contrast/saturation, (but not tint), although the "proof window" does not always quite match the final result. I then use Windows Moviemaker to do all the editing. Though no longer supported or supplied by MS, as the "Windows essentials" package it can probably be found out there somewhere. It works best with either WMV or MP4 files. They need to 16:9 or 4:3. before you start. It's not keen on doing a lot of work at once on huge Gb sized files, as it can go slow or hang. You can greyscale, and tweak brightness only. Surprisingly powerful when you get the hang of it's many features, though some are buried deep! BTW I could never get AVIDemux to do anything at all! |

The most impotant thing before you start any editing is to find the
properties for the original movie, and maintain them as best you can throughout the process, to avoid any degradation in quality. Play the movie in Media player classic, (the best option), Click on properties and make a note of the following: (ignore the total/overall bit rate). VIDEO Codec, video bit rate, frame rate. AUDIO Codec, audio bit rate, sample rate, channels. Maintain this as you edit. I use MP4 which is generally, more customiseable in editors, so you can keep the settings as close to the original. |

Another vote for avidemux, it works extremely well. Also available for many non-Windows platforms.

Can avidemux lighten movies that were poorly lit/darkly shot as well? If it can't, is there a video editing software that can brighten a video?

New Project tab/click Finish on Project's Settings pop up, Add Object icon/Video/(filename to be brightened), click OK on Object's Position Settings pop up, Video Effects icon/Adjustments/Auto Gamma, click OK on Object's Position Settings pop up, Projects menu/Export Project, Export Project tab, press Enter on the Export (premium features) pop up, then brightening of the video file will take place, when complete Projects menu/Save project then Project menu/Close all projects. Your brightened .AVI file will then be in the Videos folder (by default) named as whatever you chose as New Project above. You can see the brightened video results produced by this method on several of my posts. |
