The pic of Jane Paul, posted by brewsterrobin is rather interesting. If one looks very carefully, it appears she is without pants. If so, it would certainly fit well into the definition of pornography, in the era it was taken. I wonder if any of the S&S regulars ever did more revealing work that has never seen the light of day? Just imagine, Nicola and Marie, full frontal ! Nick

I recently found these pics of Marie which I'd almost forgotten about....she just looks ever so sweet. She did quite a bit of topless work for Ken, however, she was never topless when featured with another girl. Of all Ken's models, I feel it would have been Marie who would have been willing to reveal all. Nick

Regarding the subject of onlookers, this set of the lovely Millicent Dawson is rather interesting. In two of the pics it's obvious that there are people around and, in one pic in particular, they are very close by. The location is Hampstead Heath. What is also very interesting is that Millicent ends up without her skirt so any onlookers would have had full view of her stocking tops and pants. What an unexpected treat ! Nick

On the subject of where the photographers found the girls, the beauty competition (whatever happened to them?) scenario rings a bell. Also, of course, the mags did carry norices in every issue that they were looking for models. No doubt various wives and girlfriends appeared as well.
I would say that (judging by the frequent views of his fireplace!) Ken H was pretty prolific and was the main freelance supplier in the 1970's, equalling the Scottish photographers of the 60's. |

I was doing some glamour photography once. A nearby builder alerted his mates and I had three of them - in a row - 'hiding' in a hedge. If one plans to do that, it's best not to wear a bright yellow 'Day-glo' jacket!

For me, the golden age of Spick and Span was the Ken Howard era. All my favourite girls were photographed by him; Nicola, Marie, Laura, Ingrid, Lowra etc. So, I suppose, essentially for me the great years were from about 1968 till the end of publication in 1976. I would also like to add that repeats of earlier work (mainly by Scotllee) were regularly featured in the latter publications and, therefore, created a perfect blend of girls in pre mini skirt and post mini skirt fashion and styles. The best of both worlds, one might say and, something I enjoyed to the full. Nick
