For my heroes I'll stick to the few I was fortunate enough to meet and whose graciousness and willingness to chat with fans confirmed them as heroes. First the racecar drivers; Dan Gurney, Jim Hall, Mario Andretti, and Derek Bell. Next the baseball players; Bob Gibson, Cal Ripken, and Frank Howard.

NASCAR driver Dick Trickle whose name alone makes him a hero.
He was widely noted for having drilled a hole in his helmet so that he could smoke while racing, and for installing cigarette lighters in his race cars. Trickle was allowed by NASCAR to smoke in the race car during yellow flag periods, and in the 1990 Winston 500 Dick was seen on live television by the in-car camera lighting up and smoking a cigarette. |

Two come to mind for me.
The first was #34, Sweetness, himself, Walter Payton. In addition to being a hard-nosed player who played hurt and never avoided contact in his effort to get the extra yard, he was a great human being off the field. There's a reason why the NFL's top humanitarian award is called the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. (One of the most recent honorees was another favorite NFL player of mine, former Bears cornerback Charles "Peanut" Tillman.) The other gets a bum rap because of one play, but when I saw him play for the Cubs, I always liked Bill Buckner because he was a gritty, tough player who played every day on two bad hamstrings and was never afraid of getting his uniform dirty.

******* outstanding. I'd pick him as well. But I didn't want to write a huge list. So I kept it from when I was a little kid. I loved it when Lara would smack the Aussies around.

Alex Zanardi. He almost died in his crash in 2001. Drove after it in WTCC and GT3, tested a DTM car, and is winning now one gold medal after another in the handbike category at the paralympics. And he has a happy life with a nice and sweet family.

I hope someone mentions Eddie The Eagle Edwards
I've got plenty, and if I had to marrow it down to one I can't ... has to be two, and it's
Both took no shit, and both threw their all in every effort to win more than anyone I dare say.
