Is it true a 59 year-old man 'robbed' a bank in North Carolina so he could go to prison and get healthcare?

Let's put the pensioners in jail and the criminals in a nursing home. Radical idea? Not really read on.

This way the pensioners would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.

They'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc and they'd receive money instead of paying it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and snacks to their cell.

They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counselling, pool and education.

Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ's and legal aid would be free, on request.

Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens.

Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to.

The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised. Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room and pay £600.00 per week and have no hope of ever getting out.

Maybe a nurse unplugging someone's laptop.

But to look at it seriously, lately I've been worrying about what will happen when (if) I get too old to live by myself. I'm part of the first generation that spent at least half its life with internet access. I do a lot online, every day. I also have a huge collection of self-burnt DVDs, some of which will last a long time as long as they're properly stored.

But what happens when I'm really, really old? They always say the mind goes first, but I've known a lot of people for whom that definitely wasn't true. Clear-headed to the end, but some of them unable to take care of themselves because of physical infirmities. Now let's say that I'm a person like that. Let's say my wife goes before I do. Sooner or later someone might shove me into a home... and those places have weird rules.

I figure by the time I get old, high-speed internet access will be a fairly standard thing in "convalescence homes". But will it be heavily "filtered" access? Will there be a**hole attendants calling "lights out" early in the evening, grabbing the laptop away from me? Will these same a-holes be looking over my shoulder all the time, "tut tutting"? And will my giant video collection (including the hundreds of discs, of whatever format is then current, that I've legitimately bought) be discarded because "residents aren't allowed to have excessive amounts of personal belongings"?

Such thoughts terrify me. It's easy to joke; many people say "that's why I drink and smoke, so I won't live long enough to be old". But it's a legitimate issue, and I must say, of all the details of old age, the thought of loss of control is what frightens me the most.

Master of dark thoughts, that's me.

High speed lavatory access will be much more important when you get old.

I've met "Sir" Bono. He even bought me a pint. His dress sense in ludicrous!

Hey BB is this one of those stories like the 8.5 million Scotsmen who claim to have worked alongside Billy Connolly in the shipyard AND had Sean Connery deliver their milk when they were kids?

Eh, no. I was staying in U2's hotel in Dublin, and he was there along with his wife. He heard my Belfast accent and said hello. And told the barman to set me up a pint.

Oh yeah, they can be nice from time to time. So, last year, a friend of mine asked me if I'd like to work as some security guy during the setup of their stage that took the workers like a week. We had a free meal and drinks every day, all paid by U2. And we could see the concert for free. But they still can't buy me.

Men, just be careful around the home for the next few days, the news that Thorntons Chocolates are looking to close some stores could just be enough to tip some Ladies over the edge. So remember to tread softly, pick up your dirty laundry and pretend to be interested, only for a few days we do not wish to spoil them!
