Lovely scenery, Edwige Fenech, Barbara Bouchet, sexy lingerie and set in the ski resort of Courmayeur.

A plot straight out of Benny Hill, what's not to like.

I saw Dunkirk (2017) today and wasn't that impressed. With the bigger budgets and CGI I expected more. The film within a film - The Nancy Starling - regarding Dunkirk in Their Finest (2016) was in my mind a better film. I guess a more accurate film would be more depressing and not uplifting.

The air combat scenes bothered me as they seemed to show the most stupid German fighter pilots against a Spitfire that had "Where Eagles Dare" ammunition enhancements. I mean, what fighter escorts a bomber by being right off his wing during a bomb run?

All in all, I'd wait for it to run on cable and would not buy the blu ray like I did.

Life 2017

My best friend watched this movie a couple of months ago and told me it was crap and not worth bothering with. However, we often have different opinions on things like this and I wanted to give it a fair chance. The plot is not especially complicated. A probe returns a Martian soil sample to the International Space Station, where it's examined in a secure laboratory unit. Some dormant cells in the sample come alive and a rather nasty alien organism starts to grow in size. Okay, the plot is somewhat predictable and a bit of a cross between Alien and maybe John Carpenter's excellent remake of the Thing.

But some of the science and basic common sense practiced by supposedly professional astronauts - who are all scientists is decidedly a bit slap-dash, with the scriptwriters clearly more interested in keeping the plot going. Anyway this nasty organism gets loose within the space station and starts killing off the crew. All this and the way the film ends up will be a credibility test, if you're as picky as I am.

However, the special effects are first rate. The acting is not bad and the sets look very realistic at times. In this respect, it's almost comparable with Gravity or Interstellar.

And the thing is that I really enjoyed the film despite all the faults and it's clearly open to a follow-on. Certainly a good bit better than total garbage like Pacific Rim or some of the recent comic strip efforts where anything goes. So for me it's a 6/10 and well worth a watch.

Dunkirk 2017

I've been looking forward to this for some months. Sorry to say that although there are some very good, realistic war scenes, I now realise that I didn't like it at all.

For me, the soundtrack was astonishingly annoying and might as well have been Stockhausen. It droned on and on. No women in this film, not much of Dunkirk, a real shortage of British Tommys on the beach, not many Germans and a load of Spitfire heroics that became a bit silly.

Dunkirk is not a patch on war films like the Longest Day, Bridge at Remagen or dare I say something silly like Where Eagles Dare and lacks any kind of real spark. I'm afraid that 3-4/10 is the best I can manage.

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD






I appreciated a couple of detailed articles written about the Getty family last month.
I was fascinated by the coldness and disconnect that ran through the family.
The aforementioned is one of the many things the film gets right.
Young J. P. "Paul" Getty III (Charlie Plummer), grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer), is kidnapped in Rome by an organized crime ring.
Refusing to pay the ransom J. Paul Getty calls for his ex CIA operative fixer Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg) to find his grandson he links up with Getty III mother Gail Harris (Michelle Williams) and the search is on.

High praise to Christopher Plummer who only had 10 days to get the role down after Kevin Spacey was cut from the film due to sexual harrasment alegations,and he nails it!!
Plummer is a master of his craft displaying Getty's cheap,and cold personality to a T.
Williams is incredible as Harris the worried and on edge mother.
Charlie Plummer does well as Getty III displaying the right amounts of aloofness and fear.
Romain Duris does well as one of the kidnappers.Wahlberg has some good turns in a few strong scenes.
Ridley Scott shapes a well known story into something visually stunning and suspenseful.

Some changes to the true story are made here and there to make it a bit more exciting.As these changes played out on the big screen i kept saying to myself well all of this really isnt necessary.

I enjoyed this well acted and involving film,i encourage everyone to read the real story of the Getty family.

THE PHANTOM THREAD





This story of renowned dressmaker Daniel Day-Lewis (in what may be his final role)as Reynolds Woodcock and his muse Vicky Krieps as Alma Elson is quite engaging and beautifully shot.Directed by master director Paul Thomas Anderson he pushes the themes of being controlled by love,how far would a person go to control another,as to not be overwhelmed or completely under the finger of a lover or spouse.
It's well acted by all including Lesley Manville and Krieps
Everything is beautifully detailed with a meticulous eye from the food,cars and clothing
The film does feel a bit drawn out and i couldnt fully buy into some of the things happening in the film,but it was an enjoyable but not great possible send off for Lewis

Molly's Game






When i wake up in the middle of the night and start to channel surf ,i stop when i see a high stakes poker game being played.
Especially when celebrities like Jenifer Tilly and Gabe Kaplan are sitting at the table.But oh to be a fly on the wall at one of Molly Bloom's underground poker games a few years ago.There have been rumors of who actually participated in these games,but i still wonder about who was actually there.
Bloom did well for herself but the two things she didnt see coming was the involvement of the russina mafia and being arrested by the FBI.
Jessica Chastain is great as Bloom her narration and onscreen performance are done to a T as we see Bloom as a competitive skier ,early family life and her rise as a high stakes poker game host.
Idris Elba turns in a strong performance as Charlie Jaffey, Molly's lawyer.Kevin Costner does well as Larry Bloom, Molly's father and a clinical psychologist.
Nice acting touches also from Michael Cera,Jeremy Strong,Chris O'Dowd and Bill Camp
Aaron Sorkin's script and direction are sharp.

Some dramatic moments felt a bit forced.It's funny how some details of Bloom's life are fully fleshed out and some other's that would have been very interesting to see are only lightly touched on.
Some of the dialogue seemed a bit to loaded and came off kind of phony.
The film is interesting with flaws here and there.

Going In Style 2017

A sort of caper film starring Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. This is a group of elderly gentlemen living in NY City, ripped off by the bank, downtrodden by an evil employer and having to deal with a medical issue. They decide to get even with the establishment and put their problems right by pulling off a bank robbery.

I won't say too much about this film, as I really enjoyed it. Funny at times and generally quite uplifting, with a really good cast.

Ann-Margaret puts in an appearance and my goodness, she still looks hot despite her age - IMHO!

Highly recommended.

A small country on the verge of bankruptcy is persuaded to enter the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics as a means of raising money. Either a masterpiece of absurdity or a triumph of satire, depending on your mood, but it's quite possibly the funniest movie ever made, and becomes even funnier with subsequent viewings.

It's A Gift 1934



A henpecked New Jersey grocer makes plans to move to California to grow oranges, despite the resistance of his overbearing wife. One of my favorite lines is when the racetrack owner is negotiating to buy the broken down piece of property that Fields has traveled west for and after Fields has had a drink or twelve from his flask. The owner makes Fields an offer to which he responds "You're crazy". The racetrack owner says "And you're drunk". To which Fields responds, "Yes and tomorrow I'll be sober but you'll still be crazy".

Fields wants to sell a film story to Esoteric Studios. On the way he gets insulted by little boys, beat up for ogling a woman, and abused by a waitress. He becomes his niece's guardian when her mother is killed in a trapeze fall during the making of a circus movie. He and his niece, who he finds at a shooting gallery, fly to Mexico to sell wooden nutmegs in a Russian colony. Trying to catch his bottle as it falls from the plane, he lands on a mountain peak where lives the man- eating Mrs. Hemogloben. When he gets to the Russian colony he finds Leon Errol (father of the insulting boys and owner of the shooting gallery) already selling wooden nutmegs. He decides to woo the wealthy Mrs. Hemogloben but when he gets there Errol has preceded him. The Mexican adventure is the story that Esoteric Studios would not buy.

Hehe, I just finished it [Bright] (coincidence) and although it wasn't a good movie, it was weird too, I kinda enjoyed it.
Not to the extend that I'll watch it again, though...

I'm not really much of a fan of comic books, but you can't avoid the movies can you? And this really was a superior sort of movie.

It's absorbing, touching, and almost existentially sad. So many superheroes are either tediously good and never develop (Superman, Capt America), or they're so damn cynical and weary already (Ironman, Batman), so it's fairly surprising to have superheroes who actually have a character arc. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart certainly have that in this movie, a couple of fantastic performances.

And the direction and music are great too, and almost as important, the action scenes aren't just CGI'ed to bollocks.

Very impressed.

I watched it 4 weeks ago. That's not my favorite of the X-Men series (that is in my point of view the best serie about Super-heroes), but I had a good time.

Following the "Super heroes" vein. I just watched for the first time Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4 and the Silver Surfer.

Technically and artistically as usual, excellent US job... but in the level of acting, scenarios and direction... They were both extremely weak.
Several scenes seem totally disconnected to the story. The jokes are not funny. Really boring.
