CGBC #13 (2024 Restoration)

I have been experimenting with Topaz Video AI, and wanted to try my hand at an AI upscale and "restore". I was looking for some VHS content to work with, and then remembered these California Girl Bikini Contests.

For this project, I tried upscaling to 2X, to 4X, directly to 1080, and all sorts of different AI models and settings. After 2 months of trial and error, I am still not entirely happy with the quality of video for the end result. But I settled on a 720 upscale, with a total of 4 passes of detail restoration. I also remixed the audio with matching FLAC audio files for each dancer, and retimed them to match the speed of the tape. So I am pretty happy with the audio on this restoration, even if the video is not what I had hoped for.

I preface all of this so you all know what you are getting before you download it. It isn't perfect, but I think it is better than what we have had up until now.

Administrative/Biographical History:

This is a VHS tape titled Florida's Best Bikini and Wet T Contests featuring the 1992 Miss Budweiser Contest held at the Holiday Isle in Destin, Florida. During the contest the emcee explicitly states it is taking place in March. The contestants are a mix of local Florida girls and college students; as they are introduced the emcee states what college they attend. The girls come out, dance and move across the stage in mostly thong and string bikinis. There's a final dance-off featuring all the contestants before they line up to announce the winner.

The dance performances are fairly routine for a spring break contest of this time. The music is a string of early 1990s hits that will bring you back to that period.

The video features a bonus we t-shirt contest at the end. It seems to take place at a local rock club. But, it doesn't give away any identifying information.

Scope and Content: At the beginning of the contest the emcee states there are 26 contestants. The video only features 14. The girls are: Stella, Beth, Janet, Shelly, Susan, Jody Lynn, Dawn, Donna, Stephanie, Carmen, Janet, Tanya, Michelle, Nicole.
