I collected vinyl when that's all there was. Once compact disc came out I couldn't segue into that format fast enough. No pops. No tics. No rumble. No wow. No flutter. No wear. Instant access. Better signal to noise ratio and dynamic range. I was hooked.

I carted my vinyl collection around for twenty years from residence to residence for reasons I still lack the intellect to understand. When I last moved in 2011 I said "no more". I culled out the few dozen really cool album jackets that were artwork worthy and dumped the entire kit and kaboodle on Craigslist for a pittance.

I worked for a record company for about twenty years so I have a mammoth compact disc collection. Trouble is that I segued into mp3 about ten years ago. Over several months I ripped all of my music to mp3. I doubt my compact disc collection will follow me if I move again.

I know I'm off topic but I have friends who have a vinyl fetish and I never quite understood it. Seems a lot like clinging to an old bag phone whilst everyone else has smart phones.

I think its the same as why some people like vintage clothes or like old cars its sort of clinging to the past in a good way. Progress will always throw up something new but some will desire the old way.

Default Vinyl resurgence at the end of the Earth.

During a trip to Hobart (Tasmania) a year or so ago I found myself on the Western edge of the city where new and used musical instruments are retailed.
There was one new shop stocking almost exclusively vinyl records.

Almost diagonally opposite was another selling second hand records (including a creased cover copy of 'Thick As A Brick' for $35), as well as a few instruments.

I don't recall seeing a single C.D. outlet, although I wasn't seeking.
There does seem to be an overabundance of 'foodie' shops everywhere, not only in the city and outer suburbs but in all towns on the way down, which I guess is just reflective of the current interest on free to air television.

I happily live in bush eight miles from the nearest small coastal town where once there was two video rental places and a music outlet, now there are none. Just a shop selling new DVD's for $4, among other (liquidated stock?) things.

I was reading today that there's only one Blockbuster Store left in the world. Once we had three in Werribee alone. Still, I cann't recall the last time I watched free to air TV or a DVD so no loss.
Still got all my vinyl though and in mint condition thanks to my never letting the kids touch them. Well except my youngest son, who truly appreciates the 50's, 60's and 70's.
There's also a very good online music store I've used from time to time. They specialise in the impossible to find stuff.

Yes I was watching youtube videos fairly recently where they were down to less than a handful.
Seems they really 'dropped the ball' on Netflix and the like, that is was presented the option and passed.

I have a friend who's trying to sell what was a 'Blockbuster' store. That set me to wondering 'what happened?' and found numerous videos on youtube.

Concerning record stores in Hobart, there may well be more. It was a fleeting visit of just a few hours.
Took me by surprise and I can't remember the last time I stood in a record store beforehand.
'Spose I should check and see if 'Eduardo's' is still there in some guise, although I doubt it.

Edit: It appears it is although it's moved to Sandy Bay. Wonder if the same eccentric Steffan dude still runs it, if he is even still alive.
