Gerhard Vetter (DDR)
Gerhard Vetter (1918-1971) was one of the most famous photographers in the first 2 decades of the East German Republic. He was born in Eilenberg in saxony in 1918 and settled in Wustrow in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on his return from a POW camp in 1948. He had discovered his talent for photography before the war and was the proud owner of a Rolleiflex.
He started taking holiday souvenir snapshots of tourists visiting the island of Rügen during summer 1950. He moved with his family to Ahrenshoop in 1952 where he came into contact with the artist community, and discovered the beauty of nature and started taking nude photos. Initially he was influenced by paintings but soon developed his own unique style. His photos soon began to be published in magazines such as „Das Magazin“, „Sport-Revue“ and „Fotografie“. He also became a travel sector photographer for the Hinstorff-Verlag in Rostock shooting in Brazil India and Burma. This came to an end with the building of the Berlin wall so he resumed his focus on Black & White nude photography. He died in Wustrow in 1971
