Though there is 20 feet of snow outside and the temeprature is 100 degrees below zero F they live in a warm quonset hut where the temperature is always about 75 degrees F. They both have two computers. One for their own amusement and one which is connected to the VEF mainframe in London. Their food and supplies are air dropped by the VEF supply division. You misunderstood. Their mission is to search for signs of intelligent life in the United States, especially in the Congress.
