Artists my ass; how come millions of people in the globe have been spending their hard earned cash on acts like MJ is beyond my comprehension.

Speaking as one of the millions who spent his hard-earned cash on "Off The Wall", "Thriller", "Bad" & "Dangerous", at his best, MJ deserved praise for his musical skills (imo "Off The Wall" was MJ's best...it was less pop and a lot more funkier).

I look at today's acts like Justin Timberlake, who may sing a bit and have a few good moves - but they don't compare to Jacko at his peak.
Then again, I don't listen much to today's stuff - bland, commercial pap...

(PS: my comments should not be construed as approval of MJ as a person - but one shouldn't speak ill of the deceased)

I don't mean to be disrespectful to the buyers like you mate, but in my world charts, awards and sales has nothing to do with arts whatsoever.

There are names in the encyclopedias of music that the majority never even heard before (e.g. Nina Simone, Fats Domino, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits et al - it's a long list); the real pioneers if you will with the aid of which music progresses.

Likewise, there were many British bands where listening to their music makes it extremely hard to figure out their influences (e.g. Joy Division, The Smiths, Stone Roses) - again it's a long list - and their tunes will stay in our hearts forever.

My point is - marketing is one thing; real talent is another. Mind you, Orson Welles never got an Oscar as a director. Still, Citizen Kane is studied in most arts courses and papers are published and I'm sure will continue to do so in the future as well.

Ah, The Smiths - liked "How Soon Is Now?" - but couldn't stand Morrissey (always thought he was a pretentious git)...however let's just agree to differ.

I grew up on Motown/Stax, Disco & Jazz-Funk; embraced Rap & House in my younger years - to me, my musical pioneers are/were Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambaataa (with a nod of the hat to Kraftwerk), Roy Ayers, Marvin Gaye, Isaac "Black Moses" Hayes, Patrice Rushen (woefully underrated imo), Stevie Wonder, James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Maceo, Derrick May, Bob James, Donald Byrd, (let's stop here....).

In a perfect world MJ would have been in that list, and even if he never won awards or achieved record sales with Thriller, I think MJ's talent was evident in his work.
But in some way's I think the worst thing that happened to Jacko was the success of Thriller. It overshadowed "Off The Wall" (which as I stated earlier, I thought was a superior album) and became the standard that he never could surpass.
Unfortunately his personal life and eccentricities (to put it mildly) will always be a question mark against the man (and rightfully so, imo - which is why I stated in my previous post that my comments about his musical talents should not be construed as approval of MJ as a person)

But like I said, let's agree to differ...

PS: as for British artists: respect due to Art Of Noise (of Into Battle, Beatbox (Diverson 1) & Moments In Love), Light Of The World, Incognito, Freeez (and I DON'T mean "I.O.U." - think "Keep in Touch", & "Southern Freeez"), Atmosfear & Level 42 (before they embraced pop).

I have to agree with Dohupa. I have never given a tinker's damn about what is popular. When I was coming up in the late sixties, I hated the popular AM radio stations. It was all teenybopper baloney or other plastic music. It's the same as the Britney Spears type crap of today. That music isn't written for it's artistic value, it's written for popular approval and to move the most units possible. These "stars" are taught how to sing, what to say, how to move, where to be seen, etc. In other words, they're just produced. They're whores. They do market research, see what sells, then mold their "artist" into the biggest moneymaking machines that they can. Then they shove this pablum down our throats, paying off the radio stations, and doing media campaigns portraying their clients as the greatest talents that ever lived. Crapola! I'm not saying that Michael Jackson wasn't talented, he was, but for the most part he was groomed from the beginning by his father to be a commercial success. Nobody gave two cents about "art", it was all money. A lot of these singers have talent, of course, they have to have some, but they're misguided and completely ignorant of what real music is about. They prostitute themselves for the almighty dollar. Like Frank Zappa sarcastically said back in the sixties, "we're only in it for the money".

Yep: I heard better, more pleasing noises from an unsilenced rotary engine in a sound-proofed engine test bay near Birmingham, England. These engines are still quite loud and distinct when attached to an unmanned air vehicle and said UAV is flying at 40,000 feet. The noise they make is about as harmonic as the screams of the damned. Better than Kiss, though.

Gene Simmons video link gave me a smile, brigadeiro: thanks for that.

Bob Williams

He`s running out of tattoo money so has reared his immodestly modest personage into view again , even going so far as to toss off another album and take part in a few recording sessions with the fella`s of Take That . Giving hopeful joy to all the cretins who`s major dream in life is to fork out money to go watch a bunch of sad sacks warble and strain on stage. Anyway back to Boobie , now i`m not one to ever condone violence as you know . But something about him , ok everything about him makes me want to just drop kick him through a wall then stone him to death with every brick

I recall a band called Roxette. Utter, utter, utter, utter (continued next week) sh*te yet hugely popular. There was also an abomination called Europe, a band that made the Scorpions look like the Kronos Quartet.

Still, who am I to knock it? Well, I'm not the guy who wrote the Final Countdown, and I bet that little cheezoid keyboard melody is now going through your head.
