Latest news just in from Moscow Centre

Enraged by the poor fieldcraft shown by his agents President Putin recalls ace Agent Palo from his vodka mine in -------- and orders him to put the pair of them on the special IQ reducing machine developed by GRU scientists (the Mk2 electronic variant not the Mk1 sledgehammer). Petrov and Boshirov are wired up to the machine and told that their IQ will be reduced to 60, slightly above that of very stupid people. Palo sets the machine off and leaves the process in the 'capable' hands of his apprentice Comrade Corbinski whilst he goes off to berate those awful Brits on VEF.

On his return several hours later he finds Corbinski fast asleep and the meter on the machine reading 02. Oh my Marx thinks Palo we've turned them into total idiots. He runs over to the men and slaps them awake. As their eyes open Petrov shouts 'Awaaaay the Lads' and Boshirov answers with 'My fellow Americans'.

Well they weren't enamoured with it and this morning it was even earlier 8.41am!!!
It is impossible to go back to sleep, okay it is the weekend and they like a lie in but with something that sounds like a dentists' drill going for an hour, you can't do anything else but get up.
Oh yes you have to draw the curtains, my X-ray vision doesn't function first thing
There are huge base cuts, so it looks like they have taken the while tree out and someone is going to benefit from some nice firewood this winter.

The last time I stayed up very late, and I mean VERY late was a stint for the Winter Olympics/Commonwealth Games and each time I went to bed at 5am-the damn birds were tweeting already. I felt like opening the window and yelling out "SHUT YA BEAKS!" but that wouldn't have gone down well. I would love to go to bed at a decent time but it took me three years to retrain myself to literally go to sleep having been sleep deprived and nearly sent me round the bend.

You've read about people complaining of an annoying 'hum' and blamed on everything from machines to submarines(yes some people near the coast thought it was one of those) but in my case it was my blood pressure(hypertension) and after I started taking pills including a new experimental one it seemed to work and I got the sleep back, but I had got so used to staying up(just to try and drown out the 'noise' in my ear watching Cricket from New Zealand and later dipping in and out of those chat channels, or late night progs on BRAVO satellite tv) that it became the norm. As long as I get a full night's kip about 5-6hrs I am fine, if not that I get an internal shaking-it's not nice I assure you. I can however get up early if needed and have said to my parents to wake me if anything is wrong. We once all got up at 3am and had a cup of tea and chatted for an hour. My father gets up several times a night but that is due to prostate cancer-which is under control but it annoys him when he can't get a full nights' sleep.

The death toll is at 7 including a mother and her infant child died when a tree fell on their home.

Florence is still dumping rain as a Tropical Storm and is moving very slowly.

Forecasters are predicting at least 2 more days of rain with up to 40 inches predicted while it moves very slowly inland today and tomorrow with its circular band of rain extending 200 miles in all directions.

I have a friend who lives in NC and says its safe because he is 100 miles inland and now he is saying their streets are starting to get flooded.

I told him to evacuate and he didn't because he is 100 miles inland.

He is scheduled to be at work tonight for the overnight shift at Walmart starting at 10 pm and he says if he doesn't go, he may get fired.

I told him I am sure you are not the only one who won't show up for work and I am sure your supervisors and managers will be the first ones to stay home.

One of the problems with a storm like this, dumping so much rain over such a wide area is "evacuate to where"?

Hurricanes hitting the South and mid-Atlantic states have a long history of dumping lots of rains in the mountains-- you end up with big floods in places you don't expect them, and being on the road is its own risk (see Rita-- something like 100 deaths in the evacuation from Houston).
