That is true but on the other hand they can not prove HE doesn't exist either.

Minor clarification needed.

Using present tense versus past tense when writing or speaking depends on the assumption of a fixed state of reality versus a variable state of reality. To understand this clarification you must understand that the English language and all natural languages are containers for physical realities.

"You didn't know when we were at college 20 years ago that I am Irish." Ancestry is fixed so I am versus I was.

"You didn't know when we were at college 20 years ago that I am shorter than you are because I was wearing elevator shoes." Height is fixed so I am and you are versus I was and you were.

"You didn't know when we were at college 20 years ago that I was a better table tennis player than you were. I let you beat me." Table tennis ability is variable so I was and you were versus I am and you are. The friend with whom you are speaking might be able to beat you now.
