Default Sin City (2005)

Just watched Sin City on free to air.
Easily the best movie I've seen in an age.

Quote:
"Sin City" is infested with criminals, crooked cops and sexy dames, some searching for vengeance, some for redemption and others, both. The film incorporates storylines from three of Miller's graphic novels including 'Sin City,' which launched the long-running, critically acclaimed series, as well as 'That Yellow Bastard' and 'The Big Fat Kill.' Where Hartigan, a cop with a bum ticker and a vow to protect stripper Nancy. Marv, the outcast misanthrope, is on a mission to avenge the death of his one true love, Goldie; there's also Dwight, the clandestine love of Shelley who spends his nights defending Gail and her Old Towne girls from Jackie Boy, a dirty cop with a penchant for violence.

Default I, the Jury (1982)

Film Summary (Source: IMDb)
An old friend of a private detective is murdered. The detective, Mike Hammer, will make every effort to find out the killer. At each step he does, there is someone taking advantage of his progress.

I recall watching this flick orignally in the cinema, without it making any impression on me back then.
Watching it again today, having since viewed Stacy Keach and Ralph Meeker as the titular character, I felt Armand Assante as Mickey Spillane's no nonsense Mike Hammer was somehow ill-suited for the role now. Although he is suitably sleazy, Assante's Hammer seems too world-weary.
Barbara Carrera is suitably exotic and beautiful as Dr. Charlotte Bennett, but "I, The Jury" reminds me of an exploitation movie, in the same vein as Fear City (starring Billy Dee Williams and Tom Berenger) from 1984. Still it's a pleasant diverson for a Sunday afternoon.

These are two good films I saw from Netflix over the weekend. The first one: Collateral Beauty starring Will Smith, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren and others is basically about a shattered CEO of an advertising company (Will Smith). He lost his 6 year old daughter to a rare form of cancer, and he can't get his act together and his co-workers feel that he should not be running the company anymore. They devise this daring plan to get him to become more emotionially stable and give up the ownership of his company. It is a good emotional film. The acting is good and the production is good. It did not win any major awards, and it grossed just about three times the money it took to produce the film.

The second film La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is much better. Gosling stars as a struggling jazz piano player who dreams of opening his own club, but he is rejected by modern jazz players because they say he is too into the old kind of jazz that was palyed decades ago. Emma Stone is a beautiful young woman who dreams of being an actress, but also struggles and is rejected by all the studios on all her auditions. The two people meet one day and fall in love. The wonderful thing about this movie which by the way is a musical, dance, romantic comedy/drama, are the fantastic colors that are seen all the time , even in the night scenes. Pastel colored clothes, cars, everything is colored and bright. This film has fantastic dance numbers and Ryan Gosling had to learn how to play the piano and learn how to dance for the film. This film won many awards. Six Academy awards were won(Stone) won for best actress. The film also won 7 golden globe awards, setting a record for the most awards won by any movie ever. The film grossed more than 5 times the money needed to produce the film.

All Eyez on Me

Can you really sum a persons life in a 2 or 3 hour movie, even if it was only a brief 25 years?
Tupac Shakur was larger than life, multi talented, controversial and ambitious.

Director Benny Boom and writers Jeremy Haft,Eddie Gonzalez, and Steven Bagatourian gets the biopic All Eyez on Me off to a good start by introducing Afeni Shakur,Tupac's mother a political activist and member of the Black Panther Party, who was a loving mother but flawed woman who heavily pushed for Tupac to have a grasp of the world and to become knowledgable about it.I thought their bond was perfectly played on screen, with a definite boost from a perfomance from Danai Gurira as Afeni.

Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac Shakur did a great job, capturing the look, mannerisms and even movements of Shakur, only briefly lacking in a couple of scenes.
As the film progressed it felt more like a documentary only touching on a few things, not dwelling on anything that could have connected me more to the movie or Tupac himself.

Some of the portrayals were spot on: Kat Graham as Jada Pinkett, Chris Clarke as Shock G,and Annie Ilonzeh as Kidada Jones.Other's were laughable and lacking :Grace Gibson as Faith Evans,Lian Amado as Angie Martinez ( Thank God her scene was short !!!!) and Jarrett Ellis as Snoop Dogg, that voice over dubbing was terrible, but i did intentionally laugh at one scene he was in.

I went in expecting inaccuracies and of course there are a few.
The film truly comes to life whenever Tupac's songs were played. There are good moments that displayed why he was so loyal to Suge Knight, how bad association lead to bad turns in his life.
I wanted to see more of his connection with Biggie Smalls, more of his take on how he viewed life.
But as i stated at the beginning of this review how much can you put in a 2 or 3 hour film?
I actually hope John Singleton who walked away from this film gets to make his own Tupac biopic

As the movie drew to a close i did reflect on what i and Tupac's many fans were robbed of :So much more music, and performances from an artist that has become a legend.

47 Meters Down

Following on the heels of The Shallow's another human vs shark flick hits the big screen in 47 Meters Down.
Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) are sisters on vacation in Mexico who decide to take a boat trip to go deep diving shark watching,of course everything goes wrong and they find themselves trapped 47 meters down with some great white sharks.

There are some thrilling moments in the film as i actually felt the peril and scary situation the women were in,but then i started thinking about their logic.
Sure things may happen in a persons life and it may influence you to take a risk here and there, but whats displayed to the characters in this film should have made them do a complete about face
Then a moment is thrown in which i should have seen coming because it was actually stated a few times completely pissed me off !!

wait for the DVD !!

I just finished watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, so I'll be moving on to The Return of the King in a few minutes. I've seen those movies many times, but I cannot get enough of them.

The Deathhead Virgin (1974)
1st time viewing
- Nice little slow paced seaside ghost story.
- The title virgin is a nice slasher concept, wet naked masked female killer/ghost. Not nearly enough of her in the film but but when she is on screen it's pretty effective & sexy.
- Appreciated a few realistic little touches like her repeatedly harshly tapping a plastic radio with her feet trying to figure out what it is.
- Underwater sequences are filmed well enough.
- No spoilers but the film has a natural end point were everything seems wrapped up but it keeps going for a good bit more & is much better for it.
- Definitely the type of film & mythos that could use a modern sequel IMO
- Full thing is up on YouTube which is about the only place to find it today I imagine if anyone Is interested.
