Default Dame Vera Lynn: The Forces' Sweetheart turns 100

Considering the recent sad losses in 2016 and this year of so many iconic personalities, I'm really happy to write about Dame Vera Lynn celebrating her the 100th birthday.

To mark the centenary, her record label projected her photograph onto the white cliffs of Dover (a Spitfire fly-past was scrapped due to bad weather).

Asked for advice on ageing, she said: "Be active to your full capabilities.

"Keep interested, read books, watch television and try to keep in touch with life and what people are doing, seeing and enjoying."

Dame Vera added she finds it "humbling" people still enjoy her songs. As The Queen wrote to her: "You cheered and uplifted us all in the War and after the War, and I am sure that this evening the blue birds of Dover will be flying over to wish you a happy anniversary, Elizabeth R."

Dame Vera became known as the "forces' sweetheart" during World War Two for travelling to conflict zones around the world to give morale-boosting performances to British troops.

Truly an inspirational lady worthy of her title - happy 100th, madam!

Re Vera Lynn. That song about Dover was written by two Americans and some sort of morale booster but as we all knew here there are no bluebirds anywhere near Dover-apparently at the time of writing it was seen as being something of happiness indicator-such as the line "Mr Bluebird's on my shoulder" from the "Zip-per-dee-doo-dah" song from Disney's film(live action & animation) Song of the South and Judy Garland sang about "bluebirds fly" in her song Over the Rainbow from 'The Wizard of Oz'. One theory is that the 'bluebirds' were actually the RAF who wore blue uniforms flying over Dover(in their aeroplanes) on their way to get the Germans, which I think is pretty plausible.

Today I managed to get a new tape recorder(BUSH) and discovered that it had a USB socket to record directly on to it from tape-BUT the downside was I noticed that that space had been sacrificed to the tape counter and lack of one of those means I have no way of knowing how to find the song or tune I want, but instead use the CUE part which uses a screeching sound as it plays quickly to the next cued piece. Ah well, can't have everything I suppose.

So Theresa May has set 29th March as the trigger for Article 50 and EU negotiations. I still think she will fail to get any kind of real deal from the 27 member countries; it might well be that we have support from a few but not all including France, Germany and Italy...BUT before that some of them have their own battles for leadership so we shall see but it could be another Cameron moment where he promised to get a good deal for Britain and singularly failed miserably. Would May want to call a snap election? Again not sure but then I am equally not sure that Corbyn would be a good enough leader - he has won 2 massive mandates but does that justify him being a credible candidate for future PM? Again only time will tell.

I went to see Andre Rieu in concert at Wembley a few years ago, longest encore I ever heard, lasted about two hours! They did a tribute to Dame Vera, and she appeared on a huge screen on a recording of an interview, I think she got the biggest ovation of the evening, and the Maestro showed her such huge respect it was dereply touching.

I once saw her interviewed, and with a tear in her eye she spoke about singing 'We'll meet again' to soldiers just off to war, she said 'I knew I had to give it all I had, because so many would not be coming back' There will never be a forces sweetheart that will come close to her!

Default US to ban electronics on flights from a dozen countries

Just heard on CNN and seen on the BBC:

Passengers travelling from 10 airports in eight countries will be barred from carrying most electronic devices on US-bound flights, officials tell US media.

Airlines from certain countries in the Middle East and Africa will require passengers heading to the US to check laptops and tablets in the hold.

The directive is reportedly the result of a security threat and could be announced as soon as Tuesday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined to comment on the issue.

Only when he knew he was losing the war that he'd helped start.

Everybody knows Martin McGuinness started the war in the 1590s.
