There is free software and you can find usefull info and tutorials on Binaries4all also one on how to setup and use the freeware program to browse and download binaries from the usenet: GrabIt (Windows All).

Note that if you will able to access the usenet will depend on the newsserver of your Internet Service Provider when you are lucky its a good one otherwise you will have very poor or no access to the usenet and your only option would be to signup on a premium newsserver. Bandwith use that your ISP allows you also can be a issue.

GrabIt Tutorial

Alt.Binz is another freeware program very simular to GrabIt that some prefer:

Alt.Binz 0.25.0 (Windows all (don't know 100% sure if it runs on Vista)). 0.25.0 is the last freeware release of this program the newer versions are payware but it still can be downloaded via the official channels, also the non-install zip versions (unpack and run).

Alt.Binz Tutorial (Dutch only)

Good site to have a look whats on newsgroups: Binsearch (also has a browse newsgroups option)

Dubsalute is on the money on these suggestions for USENET,Zim.My one suggestion for a free newsreader is XNews, which is a free newsreader program
that handles the Yenc files on the Usenet.

http://www.download.com/Xnews/3000-2...dlPid=10144167

Also another great search tool for Usenet is PictureView. You have to sign up and pay some bucks to download from Pictureview, but the search is free. This free search will at least show you what pics etc are available in the newsgroups, plus you can also see which groups contain the most images etc.

For years I used Forte Agent, with dial up service.
Agent was cool, but my ISP another story.
I noticed a few things over the years of posting and downloading.
However, it was always unlimited up/downloads, as much as I could handle.
The down side was my ISP was only carrying a handful of decent groups.
In the end, usenet was ravaged by spam. Mega spam. Filters useless.

I moved to XNews on broadband, and it was a world of difference at first.
Every newsgroup imaginable, and lightning speed.
This ended quickly. First off, regardless of XNews or not,
I had to set up an account with my broadband provider,
and started with Outlook. I never used Outlook, just set it up.

Then when XNews was rolling thunder big time, it stopped.
Evidentally my broadband provider only allowed my 4Gb per month,
and I had downloaded a ton of image sets and movies and passed 8 Gb.
It hasn't connected but twice since. I just hate dealing with the provider.

I tried the old trick of multiple broadband accounts, allowed up to 4,
but it is just a non-usenet friendly broadband provider. I would
end up having to support-chat every month to get them to do the 30-day reset.
Sad really, usenet was a great thing at one time.

By all means, if anyone has a good thing going with usenet,
keep it rolling, it was always great even weeding through the spam.

Yes, you can see a lot of these archived in Google groups, and look at the origin of spam !

Have used Forte Inc's Agent in the past and was happy with it until I found newsbin which downloads binaries much faster than Agent.
It also allows you to sort your selected downloads on date/time so you can download the oldest posting first, something not possible in Agent .

For decent usenet downloading you're usually better off with a commercial usenet server since they offer substantially longer retention times (how long postings are available for downloading) than ISP usenet servers.

Many of the binary groups that used to carry decent postings are nowadays suffering severely from spam.
Add to that that most of the regular posters that used to frequent those groups have moved on and their places have not been filled by others. Something which only added to the proliferation of spam as there were no regular posters left to fight it.

That doesn't mean you'd be wasting your time browsing usenet. There are still binary groups worth keeping an eye on.
However, many of the postings nowadays are deliberately given cryptic titles to avoid copyright problems. So be prepared to spend time to learn the abbreviations used.

In case you're EU based : enjoy usenet while you can. The entertainment industry is heavily lobbying in Brussels to get binary usenet groups completely banned. It is only a matter of time before they will succeed.

I loved Usenet, those were the days, Britbabes, Hairy, Radio 4, sadly my current provider doesn't provide access.

The best program I ever used for grabbing from Usenet was Unison, unfortunately it's MAC only. When I went back to Windows I used Newsleecher and it was pretty useful.

Being the cheap bastard I am I did several trials with these 2

www.giganews.com and www.easynews.com

Both had excellent retention rates but the spam drove me crazy
Just a shame website search engines that took all their content from newsgroups like globalnews.it died

At least you can view whats on the groups for free once your registered
restricted to minimal downloads

Another vote for xnews. It's old, but it's so close to perfect it never needed much more.
