Damn! How I envy you guys! I used to live in New Jersey, right across the river from NYC, where there were bars galore everyfreakinwhere. Now I live in Moultrie, Georgia, which is kind of like living in freakin Mayberry. The best bar we have here is Applebee's, which is like....crap.

My favorite used to be The Plough & Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Now I mostly just get drunk with my neighbor on his couch.

It's been a while since I had the chance of a decent crawl round Liverpool but here are a few of my faves. Not my photos so they're not the best quality.

Let's start off at the White Star this is what all city centre pubs should be like. Possibly my favourite of them all.

http://www.thewhitestar.co.uk/

Dr. Duncan's - great beer, magnificent decor in the large back room & handy for Lime Street station & tha buses when you've had enough.

The Philharmonic - world-famous for it's interior (especially the gent's toilet).

And a few others

The Baltic Fleet - down near the old docks.

The Roscoe Head

Rigby's

And finally - Mecca for real ale drinkers - The Ship and Mitre - looks a bit rough from the outside but don't let that put you off - this place even has it's own beer festivals.

http://www.shipandmitre.com/

Therte are plenty of others I couldn't find pics of;

The Cornmarket, The Globe, Ye Cracke, The Brewery Tap etc.

but this site gives details on a few of them

http://www.liverpoolpubguide.co.uk/

Also, Liverpool has possibly the oddest (and coolest) place for a beer festival - Ales From The Crypt - held in the crypt of the Catholic Cathedral.

Oh, yes. I wish they were all like the White Star. Ha. Damn, maxedout! I don't want to hear one single complaint out of you! You're drinking in freakin palaces! Is there a bouncer at the door, or a tour guide? If you get drunk, what do they do? Call you a cab, or take you home in a limo and tuck you in?

To be honest brian in the UK we have some of the most unique, beautifull, oldest pubs in the world, Im not thumbing my nose at other Countrys bars (hell. I can get drunk anywhere) its just that we have a long history of good boozers, mind we have some awful ones as well, but this thread is about good ones

I have been in the pubs in Liverpool many many times and can confirm they are great (a pee at the Philharmonic has to be experienced)

Thanks for your contributions guys this is becoming a nice Worldwide guide

Since you brought up other countries, here's one of my favorites. The Bodeguita del Medio, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It's a spinoff of the famous one from Cuba, but bigger and with a sea view. Great beer selection and anything else you could want. I took this shot last time I was there.

Default Royal Cricketers Arms

Here's a pub where I have spent many a happy hour in the past.

A proper home from home in the western suburbs of Sydney.

Usually have Draught Bass although its technically keg under pressure. Foods usually pretty good too.

Well you have to remember that Liverpool, as one of Britain's main ports, used to be one of the richest cities in the world so it has more than it's fair share of magnificent architecture a surprising amount of which managed to survive the fire-bombing in WWII. The plebs (like me) usually made do with less salubrious back-street pubs & a lot of these are still around, albeit a bit more up-market these days but some at least haven't turned into bistros & "fun pubs" (I hate that phrase)

I found a better picture of the bar at the Phil

The gent's toilet is on the Blue Badge guided tour of the city.
Former customers include John Lennon (of course, there's hardly a pub in the city that doesn't claim he drank there), Bill Clinton and (allegedly) Adolf Hitler - one of his relatives lived in Liverpool & there's a persistent rumour that Adolf spent some time with them.
Beryl Bainbridge even wrote a short novel about it called "Young Adolf".

Another ornate pub is The Vines on Lime Street - known as "The Big House"

The fireplace is huge - it's an old picture (again, not one of mine) & you'll be glad to hear they got rid of the out-of-place gas fire. There's also a glass dome in the ceiling which is worth a look.

Back in the early 1990's a pair of paintings built into the wall of the Vines were discovered to have been by George Earl & were sold for a fortune. Not bad for things that generations of drunk scousers had been leaning against.

That's all incredibly beautiful! I've got a good idea. I've got a cabinetmaking shop here in the states, and business is terrible, due to the current economic predicament. I have always wanted to see your beautiful country, so why don't you, and GreenSkull, and Tabler, and Farowt, and Georgemacspoon, and mvasilj, and scoundrel, and all you guys chip in to a kitty and I'll come over and visit with you guys! Yeah! Sounds like a plan to me! Ok, start collecting.

Thumbs up I rate this thread five stars

Not able to live in Leeds right now due to work commitments , plus a crazy ex-girlfriend .How crazy ?, i had to go abroad late last year so lent her my key to pop in and feed my cat , and when i got back she`d moved in !

But when i was there then Mojo was one of my favourite haunts , and probably one of the best places to meet cultured young Yorkshire women. Musics not too loud ,the barmen not too good looking and the prices reasonable

18 Merrion Street
Sun-Thur: 5pm-2am; Fri-Sat: 5pm-3am

Then there`s also the famous Sandinista , i used to prefer this one to take those cultured women to as it`d be a great second date place as it`s full of conversation pieces and ice breakers.

5 Cross Belgrave Street
Sun-Wed: 12pm-1am, Thu: 12pm-2am, Fri-Sat: 12pm-3am

Oh and the last time i was there the bouncers and bar staff all looked like rejects from a Barnum's freak exhibit , always a help when you`re wooing a damsel

Also it`s my cat`s favourite pit stop , but then she did convince them to run her a tab

Foolish people
