Jennifer Connelly nudity discussion
Unfortunately, she claims she used a merkle--a pubic wig covering, for those unfamiliar. Seems strange though because she's shown bush before. And this scene was so brief you barely saw anything. Maybe it's industry standard now because so many actresses shave their nether parts, and probably there are some rules about that.

I think they're afraid of showing the lips of the girl's vagina. If she's shaven, they may be visible, and that might get an X rating.
In that movie with Michelle Williams and Sarah Silverman in a shower, the female director told the girls to let things grow down there. Otherwise, their vulvas would be visible, and they'd get an X rating |

Hmmm.... so that's why the "landing strip" is so popular in R rated flicks. How bout that? Good point!

Not to sound too academic, but ya' know...
Very interesting point indeed doyle!
This discussion reminds me of when I saw Jennifer in Requiem for a Dream. She showed some bush during a scene when she was standing in front of a mirror. Such scenes are rare in contemporary Hollywood. I've always viewed Jen as a very different kind of actress, one that's not afraid to go against the "norm" and how she is able to to tell a story with her body.

Yeah. Straight line at upper bush area. Based on her two real bush flashes in movies, this is not what hers looks like...she isn't a barber-class shaver I guess.

My thoughts...
It is likely that Jennifer has trimmed or shaved since those previous films and to be in accord with the 1960s setting is using a merkin (the correct word), I see no reason to doubt her word. That sort of film, literate, worthy etc. would risk at most an NC-17 rating and not an X rating. It's doubtful that a brief exposure of lips would result in the denial of an R rating, if memory serves 'Basic Instinct' got an R and although they cut elsewhere, the infamous Shazza shows the cops the goods scene was in the R cut. |

Ah, yes. Merkin. NOT "merkle." You're right. God bless you for pointing that out.
At any rate, I am fairly sure that it was NOT a MERKIN that Jen was wearing in the scene in "Shelter." A fairly recent film that carries over the JC non-shaven look...once again, thank God. Whatever reason there was for a merkin in this last film, I for one would be thrilled if Jennifer never considered shaving her pubes...a move that has become popular among actresses around her age (i.e. see Salma Hayek in "Ask The Dust" to get a look at her Brazilian cut).
