Like the Victorians the morally upright America of the 1950's was obsessed about morality making themes such as prostitution and fallen women of all social classes a salacious theme for pulp novels.

Red light areas became known as 'Sin Street' and the unfortunate women described as tramps and worse.

Included is Emile Zola's 'Nana' the story of the streetwalker turned society lady.

Carter Brown (1 August 1923 - 5 May 1985), real name Alan Geoffrey Yates, was a British-Australian author of crime fiction.

He was born in London but moved to Australia in 1948. He started writing full time in 1953 writing as many as 150 crime stories, selling tens of millions of copies. His books were set in the United States but were more popular in Europe. (source:Wikipedia)

Hank Janson is both a fictional character and a pseudonym created by the English author Stephen D. Frances. Frances wrote a series of thrillers by, and often featuring, Hank Janson, beginning with When Dames Get Tough (1946). Many of the later "Hank Janson" novels were the work of other authors.
