Talk about girls in motorsport (grid girl, pit babe...)
Quote:
Would any of you know which F1 magazines showed the most female and male nudity back in the 70s? There are so many great pics of grid girls with the drivers; some drivers lounging around topless themselves. Gives the impression of a super sexually charged sorrounding. However those pics almost always turn up in retrospective articles from today. I wonder where they appeared back in their time; or if they were dug out for nostalgia only in modern days? Grand Prix International was on sale in the UK for many years, I worked in the news industry for a few years and happened to have the contract to supply one of the F1 GP teams, they took hundreds of each issue which were sent to sponsors and given to staff. Some of the copies sent abroad had to be censored due to the visible T&A on show, not every country had the liberal views that the UK did at the time.
Being 'in the trade' allowed me to get to some of the GP's, where it was not unusual to find young ladies in various states of undress draped on or around the cars, posing with drivers, F1 wasn't as controlled as it is now so many young hopeful models would happily wander up to cars and expose a fair bit of flesh for photographers to see if it would help boost their career. Some of the teams were quick to put a stop to anyone doing this but they tended to be the ones sponsored by companies based in the middle east. Teams with tobacco sponsorship seemed happy to accommodate these impromptu 'glamour' sessions, in many cases they instigated it. Attitudes were more relaxed a few years back and no one seemed to mind, trying doing this in the current F1 paddock and you will be out of the gate quicker than Lewis on a qualifying lap. |
