I have nothing to say in defence of the meddling and imbecile stupidity of US foreign policy in Syria, which the British Cameron government backed when it had better sources of information and should have used its influence (such as that is) in Washington to try to dissuade Mr Obama from a really bad mistake. But at no stage did the USA or NATO support or sponsor ISIS. It was of course the offshoot of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the organisation which the USA spent years and untold wealth crushing in Iraq - there is no reason why the USA or NATO would have wanted to collude with such an enemy.

It is tiresome to have to even address something so obviously ridiculous and tiresome to have to defend the Obama administration and the British government when any fool can see how badly they bungled in Syria - but they did not create ISIS, except indirectly by destroying an organised state in Syria and making the hole ISIS exploited. ISIS is an end product of Islamist militancy, made possible by American foreign policy mistakes but created by the supporters of neanderthal religious bigotry. Unfortunately, the Middle East is lousy with such people always waiting for a chance, and this is a big reason why superpowers should not rock the boat there. But ISIS was not invented or supported by the USA or NATO. People who say so are promoting a lie, and if the aim is to make Britain or the USA look bad, it is silly, when the truth itself is bad enough.
