Aha! I see. Although I don't. Almost no one has realized I'm not Einstein, but I have to confirm it's true

A fun thread that can be ruined by it .... like right now with the slight feel of I can't be bothered with it ... over politics

Seriously, palo did start it as a fun thread and at times it ain't.
Congratulations and thanks for once again demonstrating how an innocent, off-the-cuff wise-ass remark can go seriously awry here and everywhere else.

Try telling a woman her girlfriend has a great rack or a really nice ass and see how much trouble you can get into. Even after you say, "Your tits are really nice, too" you are still in trouble.

& I wouldn't say the NZ economy or govt. was stable.

"Growth" founded upon unsustainable agro-industrial intensification, polluted water, cheap overseas labour, diminished labour productivity...
...and how do you figure that then-excluding our current one who only took over last Dec-his two predecessors were in the job for 8 and 9 years respectively-in 18 years we've had three-Australia has had 5-one of whom didn't even make it to three months in office..

the last two NZ administrations each returned in office for three successive terms each...yes that DEFINITELY sounds unstable...

Under our current PM-then minister of finance, we came through the global financial crisis virtually untouched-so yes-we MUST have had an unstable economy...

'unsustainable'....you mean like digging stuff up out of the ground and selling it offshore?.....in a diminishing demand world market?......remind me again which way international dairy is heading?...

In the spirit of fairness i will concede you the diminished labour productivity point

I don't equate continuity of the leader/figure-head necessarily with sound/stable economic or political management. That's a game of deck chairs.

No. You've seemingly read a comma indicated below in the following phrase that wasn't there:

I was talking about the ending of sustainable uses of the land and water by the demands of supply industries and finance capital. There've been various articles about such in the local newsrag of late, e.g. #1, #2. But I'd also agree that extractive industries like mining tend not to be very sustainable over the longer term. Privatise profits & publicise waste/environmental degradation/costs.

I am still intrigued as to why you would imply NZ is somehow lacking in sound/stable economic and political management-I omitted to mention in my previous comments that in the period alluded to earlier we have also been hit with two massive earthquakes-5 years apart-which have had massive costs-the February 2011 quake is rated the third most expensive natural disaster in history: http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/...c...most-expensive

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10795342-which in scale vastly exceed any natural disaster Australia has experienced.

The damage to basic infrastructure in particular was massive on both cases-and we are still recovering-in the case of Christchurch in a localised urban area, and in the case of the Nov 2016 quake, SI major transport and communication links were utterly destroyed-which have far more direct effects on the economy.

-and even with this, the NZ economy coped with barely a blip-from a nation of less than 5 million people-I would argue the exact opposite of what you are implying-ONLY a sound and stable economy and government could have coped with a natural disaster on this scale....life went on, taxes didn't go up-and the government recorded a surplus. Rather extraordinary considering!

just because the NZ economy is small, and has only a moderate rate of growth, is no reason to assume it is unstable and mismanaged-we have never been proponents of boom and bust economics...
