There's a story that in WW II the Imperial Japanese Army advanced through Burma on bicycles. When they ran out of puncture repair kits they took off the tyres and cycled on the rims. The clattering sound that resulted convinced some of the defending forces that tanks were approaching. They had been assured that tanks wouldn't be fielded as they were useless in jungle fighting. So without actually having any tanks, their ability to instill fear into the poor bloody infantry was accomplished with knackered old bicycles.

If I'm not allowed to pick bicycles, then the Jagdpanzer 38 'Hetzer'

Just because I saw one at Bovington and liked it.

So one thing that I still have to do at some point before I shuffle off this mortal coil, is visit Bovington Tank museum...

Luckily, LazerPig has just posted an hour long vid on his recent access-all-areas visit and gets to dazzle us all with his extensive knowledge of obscure tanks and prototypes. As a World of Tanks player myself, it's amazing to see some of the types they have in their collection as I've only see them as a pixels on a screen.

Btw, did you know Bovington and Wargaming inc are teaming up to restore a FV4005 prototype to full working order?!?

Apparently they're looking for £20,000 so if you're feeling a bit flush, every little bit helps!

I hesitate to recommend it given the current ongoing situation-but the IDF armoured museum at Latrun, Israel is most definitely worth a visit or two-or three in my case...the only place in the world where you can see a Merkava 1,2 and 3 side by side (and presumably by now, a 4...) and compare the differences.

I should dig out my photos, scan them and post some here-once I find the damn things....

The other one to visit-and I didn't have time whilst in France earlier this year is the French equivalent establishment-'Musee des Blindes' at Saumur

During the end of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 (basically the Soviets doing Tiananmen Square on a larger scale) 2 disabled Soviet ISU-152 assault guns in Budapest's 8th District with an abandoned T-34/85 tank in the background.

Sole surviving AFV from Stalingrad. Russian students of anthropology regularly conduct digs on the battlefield and always unearth countless victims. Most are unidentifiable. Those that can be identified are reburied with full honours on the Soviet side near Stalingrad.

German soldiers remains are given to the German Embassy and handed to the German Associations for reburial in German cemeteries within Russia.

At the end you can hear the strains of Zhuravli (Cranes) which is a very sad and moving folk song about the spirits of soldiers flying away in the sky.

Sung hear by one of the greatest ever baritones Hvorostovsky and laid to rest next to Fyodor Chaliapin in Novodevichy cemetery.

I used to play Steel Panthers World At War by Matrix games a hex based turn strategy game at company level which covered hundreds of historical scenarios from WW2. All with accurate ballistics data, vehicle data and OOBs. It's impossible to play on Windows 11 unfortunately but it's related game Steel Panthers WW2 is. And has a great modding community.
