St. Johnstone 2 - Celtic 1
Quote:
We were in cruise control for a time. Then a strange, gradual click down through the gears - as half the team seemed to put the tools away. Too many lads thinking about Wednesday's CL opener against Benfica, I suspect. That's not good enough, and neither were we. Well done St. Johnstone, they were worth the points. On the bright side, my wee team, Wick Academy... http://www.wick-academy.co.uk/ ...picked up a thumping good 0 - 4 away win in the Highland League. We left when I was an infant, but both sides of my family are from the town, so they're my second team. It's near John 'O' Groats, which is NOT the most northerly part of the mainland.

Well, we're still unbeaten in the League and showed a bit of fight to get back 2 goals against Birmingham yesterday. Cracking goal from 'Foxy' and second biggest attendance. Things are looking UP at the City Ground.
P.S. I really do not care a flying f*c* whether Ferdinand shakes Terry's hand!

It's one of those political-correctness bullshit introductions that is meaningless and frankly tiresome. If players want to shake hands, swap shirts or even telephone numbers or wives after a great contest then by all means do so, but at the end of a game. Otherwise it's simply empty gesturing for the TV audience. It's not about the handshake, it's about the 90 minutes thereafter. |

Was just watching the highlights of the Liverpool v Sunderland match
One thing struck me - English Fullback - namely Glen Johnson - is about the worst defensive fullback for tackling I've ever seen - allowing a player to waltz past him and not even body check him,let alone put in a tackle to impede his passage is beyond bizarre. Great attacker but his defensive frailties cost his team goals Given their attack is at sixes and sevens with finishing not something they can really afford to carry I would have thought Maybe they should shift him to the forward line and move MR downing back to fullback sooner rather than later given the manager seems hell bent on moving an inept attacker/winder Downing into defence - i'd suggest if Dalglish hadnt over paid for him he'd be long gone already Seems like the perfect swap the fullback who cant defend but wants to attack versus the winger who hasnt created an assist or scored a goal since joining Liverpool Players often go between the positions successfully Paul Warhurst for Sheffield Wednesday went from centre halve to striker and excelled all be it in only 12 games before the clubs injured strikers were back Sheffield Wednesday came in for Warhurst in the summer of 1991, for £750,000. He began his career at the club as a solid defender, but midway through his second season, injuries to David Hirst and Mark Bright saw Warhurst employed as an emergency striker. In a phenomenal sequence, he scored 12 goals in as many games, and after four years as a defender, was called up to the England national team as a striker. Warhurst was injured, however, and missed an opportunity to win his first cap. His scoring ratio inevitably slowed down, and when Hirst returned to action, Warhurst fell out with manager Trevor Francis, who wanted the player to return to defensive duties. In the summer of 1993, Warhurst was transfer-listed and left the club, having scored 18 goals in 88 games for Wednesday. |

Warhurst did well - Chris Sutton was another famous Gamekeeper turned Poacher, as it were, starting out as Norwich centre half, turned into an emergency striker and the success at Blackburn - and couldn't hit the proverbial cow's arse at Chelsea. There's been others - Jack Charlton played 21 games at c/f for Leeds during an injury crisis and managed a very respectable 12 goals in 21 starts up front. But the finest of them all without a shadow of a doubt was the GREAT (not a word I use lightly I hasten to add) John Charles - simply world class in either position. The Italian media in 2000 voted him the greatest overseas footballer ever to play in Italy - ahead of Maradona, Gullit, Van Basten etc. which is one hell of a tribute. Even ahead of Luther Blisset. My late Uncle Jack, who used to travel literally all over the country to watch football, being a football lover but never supporting one team, and whose opinion I respect hugely, reckoned that JC was second only to Duncan Edwards as the greatest footballer these islands have produced. Oh and before you ask, El Beatle Best was his third choice. Now there's a topic for debate... |
