Guy builds intricate Star Trek Klingon warship using 25,000 Lego bricks

It was a project eight years in the making—well, technically nine now. One LEGO fan has built his own Star Trek Klingon Bird of Prey using about 25,000 blocks, based on a virtual blueprint he started all the way back in 2008.

Kevin J. Walter from Germany recently unveiled his completed Bird of Prey, inspired by the famous Klingon warship from Star Trek. It’s based on a virtual design he created between 2008 and 2010. While that conceptual version used over 250,000 blocks, the real thing required about one-tenth of that. It’s about 71 cm. long, 42 cm. wide, and 86 cm. wide, including the stand. It’s amazing to look at the before and after, to see just how well Walter was able to bring his design to life.

Walter told io9 that it took him about a year and a half to build the real version, using a variety of parts ordered through Bricklink. He didn’t buy any full sets, but he did incorporate unique parts from them, like the Bilbo Baggins’ front door, which was used to make the guns. He added that it was a tribute to Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, which io9 celebrated with gusto in late 2016, as well as his own childhood.

“I watched Star Trek very early in my childhood and this ship always inspired me. All my early LEGO spaceships I built as a child were inspired by the BoP and I always tried to capture its unique style,” Walter told io9.

Walter said his next goal is to finish his build of Barad-dûr(you know, the Eye of Sauron thing), which will be about 150,000 pieces by the time it’s done. He’s been working on that one for over six years, and hopes to finish it in time for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ 15th anniversary in 2017.

Asteroid named after Star Trek: The Next Generation's Wil Wheaton

Wil Wheaton played the boy genius Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation and is still a staple of nerd and science fiction culture today. Wheaton may be best known for TNG, but he has appeared on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory and hosts his own online show about tabletop gaming, appropriately named Tabletop.
Still all his accolades from television and film aside, some of the best work Wheaton has done are in education. Wheaton has been a strong proponent for science education at all levels. If you haven’t seen his inspiring speech on STEM education at USA Science and Engineering Festival you’re missing out.

So for all of these reasons it’s no wonder that NASA decided to honor Wheaton by naming Asteroid 391257 after him.
