My absolute favourite is Dagmar Krause - it's just occurred to me that she's a bit like another of my favourites, Peter Hammill, in that she's a great and very accomplished singer, but also a great vocalist - IE, she will use her voice for effects that a singing teacher would balk at.

Almost as if she knew) and Joanna Newsome. Sandy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VBh0sJYMiY Joanna: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFtTN...eature=related |

German singer/musician Claudia Brucken is one female voice I love to hear. She was the lead singer in German 1980's band Propaganda and went solo after that. Her voice is absolute sublime, sexy and very emotional.

Karen Carpenter has already been mentioned but what the heck.
Karen Carpenter: Solitaire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tgfBabA1_U [/URL] Judy Collins: Both Sides Now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8jGFu7ys64 A nostalgic memory from my childhood, which I sometimes regret that I grew up to understand only too well. Another childhood memory: my mother played this to me as a baby when she wanted me to go to sleep, and it worked like a charm. Most of the magic is the magic of the human voice, specifically Judy Durhams very evocative and soothing voice, which explores the Id. Morningtown Ride. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scXGFM7R4sY Leigh Nash: a really excellent singer. She has one of the truest and sweetest voices I have ever heard. It isnt Christmas yet but I couldnt care less. Angels We Have Heard On High. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-b5IC_Jsfc Shania Twain: beautiful and a superb singer with a very distinctive voice, emotionally powerful and intensely feminine. I can listen to her for a long time. Youre Still The One. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZH-...ature=artistob

Ladies and Genitalmen - Miss Grace Jones
Many many years ago I picked up a bootleg compilation cassette of Grace Jones. (Anyone remember those?)
Turned out to be an excellent compilation of her early stuff, before "Slave to the Rythm". I just happened to stumble across this live version of 'Slave' recently, in which she shows a true command of the stage... and those legs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj4xWuM86GE |
