Johann Joseph Fux was an obscure Austrian composer and music theorist during the Baroque period. Fux is credited with writing a treatise on 'counterpoint' a very difficult to understand blending of notes of instrumental music with that of vocal music. "Almost all modern courses on Renaissance counterpoint, a mainstay of college music curricula, are indebted in some degrees to this work by Fux." Fux spent most of his life in the courts of various Austrian emperors such as Emperor Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI. If it wasn't for counterpoint written by Fux many of the great masters such as Joseph Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven would not have been able to compose their great operatic masterpieces. Fux did not compose much instrumental music. He did however produce much church music such as oratorios and operas. The disc I have has two opera overtures, and two serenades.

Dear Einojuhani Rautavaara continued the symphonic tradition in Finland and swung away from early radical tendencies blending in harmonies and modes of the romantic persuasion with an eclectic mix of atonality and music that in places reminds one of Debussy and Shostakovich.

His Piano Concerto is well worth a listen especially the start of the majestic opening movement. Sadly he passed away last year. Hopefully he will be given a retrospective in time perhaps at the Proms as he seems vastly overlooked along with Kalevi Aho.
