The Council of Europe’s human rights watchdog has condemned Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda scheme, saying it raises “major issues about the human rights of asylum seekers and the rule of law”.
This Act of Parliament will establish the rule of Law.

The human rights of genuine asylum seekers who have fled from our neighbouring countries to the UK due to clear and present danger to their safety in those same neighbouring countries, will still be upheld, but this whole Act is for those who are migrating across multiple safe countries on economic grounds.

For as much of a complete disaster zone & dangerous place to live you make the UK out to be, there's clearly something still better about here than half of Europe they've marched through on their way to the French departure lounges along the Channel coast.

Surprised you are so supportive of migrants from countries that are primarily Islamic. They may pretend to be gay or Christian when they land in the UK, but your support for alphabet minorities is so misaligned with their views. I think another solution to this would be for every economic migrant that we receive from, say Afghanistan, a UK citizen who supports their right to come here should move to Afghanistan.

Crikey, you're really digging deep into the realm of the great International Jewish conspiracy for this one.

Gideon Falter is a journalist, and probably did go out to create the scenario to highlight the real stance of the Met in relation to the Hamas rallies and the danger they pose to Jews.

It would be particularly stupid of him not to hire some form of personal protection, given the violent nature of some of the terrorist supporters, as witnessed by the destruction of property.
To say he's Mossad is par for the course in your fantasy world: why not just say everyone at the rally were Hamas agents while you're at it? Never let reality get in the way of a good outrage though...

A wonderful idea. Sadly, probably unworkable in practice.
How about requiring those who support them to pay for all costs while leaving all who don't unburdened. Make it a sliding scale so the elite wealthy supporters would pay exorbitantly.
A simple referendum by ID would do it.

We'd be able to hear the brakes screeching on UK immigration over here in the US.

Regardless of the background behind Gideon Falter's presence on the day, the police officer's response was still cringe-worthy.

I wonder - if this had been Doreen Lawrence being told she was "openly black", or India Willoughby being told she was "openly trans" in similar circumstances, would our fellow member be so dismissive?

Or even better. For each Afghanistan person that we receive, a Tory politician gets pushed out of the aeroplane - while it flies over Afghanistan. A place chosen, due to their desire to be 'out of Europe'!

Parachutes would be available as an optional extra (price £5 million each)... 😜

St George's Day: Arrests after disorder breaks out at Whitehall event
Quote:
Six people have been arrested at a St George's Day event in central London, the Metropolitan Police has said.

A man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after "a police horse was targeted" in Westminster.

Three have been held on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, one for suspected assault and one on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

The Met shared a video on X which seems to show officers forming a cordon and a group pushing past it.

Whitehall had to close to traffic while the situation was resolved.

Afterwards a group gathered opposite Downing Street where there was also a large police presence.

The Metropolitan Police posted a video just after 14:00 BST on Tuesday along with the message: "The event is not due to start for an hour and regrettably officers are already dealing with disorder.

"There is an area allocated for this event in Richmond Terrace. This group went past it and continued up Whitehall.

"When officers formed a cordon and asked the group to turn round, they reacted by violently forcing their way through. Mounted officers intervened with horses to restore the cordon."

An earlier post from police said a number of people had been seen in the area wearing masks, and a Section 60AA order was in force in the boroughs of Lambeth and Westminster "giving officers the power to require the removal of face coverings".

Attendees were seen waving St George's Cross flags and listening to speeches, including by far-right activist Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley Lennon).

Tommy Robinson case collapses over police paperwork
23 April 2024, 14:41 BST
Quote:
Far-right activist Tommy Robinson has been cleared of breaching a dispersal order after a judge ruled the power had not been legally authorised.

The 41-year-old, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested at a march against antisemitism after organisers said he would not be welcome.

A senior Met Police officer who signed the dispersal order had previously told Westminster Magistrates' Court he had used the wrong date.

On Tuesday, District Judge Daniel Sternberg ruled there was no case to answer.

Following the verdict, Mr Robinson announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he was planning to sue the Metropolitan Police.

He posted: "The next time I see you lot in court it’s going to be you having to defend your actions."

The responsibility of policing certain aspects of the protest, which was being held in Westminster, central London, fell to Insp Steve Parker-Phipps.

The court heard the inspector imposed a Section 35 order under the Crime and Policing Act 2014 when he thought a "right-wing group" could potentially be attending.

Insp Parker-Phipps, whose laptop battery was "dying", put the order in place at 10:00 GMT on 26 November, but accidentally dated the form for 24 November.

Mr Robinson's defence lawyer, Alisdair Williamson KC, told the court there had been a "litany of catastrophic errors" in the Met's handling of the incident.

Questioning the inspector, Mr Williamson said: "This document is not correct is it?

"Can we have any confidence that there was a lawful order in place?"

To which the inspector replied: "No."

'No case to answer'

Giving his ruling, District Judge Daniel Sternberg said: "I am not satisfied there was a legal authorisation.

"There is no case for you to answer."

The hearing was attended by numerous supporters of Mr Robinson who filled the public gallery.

During his arrest, officers sprayed the English Defence League founder with synthetic pepper spray and handcuffed him.

He uploaded a video of himself with partially closed eyes to social media after the incident.

Other footage of him arguing with police officers was also posted on his X account, with Mr Robinson claiming to be present as a journalist at the march.

Default St George's Day

Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer both rule out St George bank holiday
Quote:
Workers look unlikely to get an extra day off, after both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer declined to commit to a bank holiday to mark St George's Day.

In 2017, then Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he wanted four new UK-wide bank holidays to mark each UK nation's patron saint day.

Asked about the policy, Sir Keir suggested a new bank holiday was not possible because of the economy.

Mr Sunak also declined to commit to a new holiday when asked by reporters.

He said he was in "celebration mode" over St George's Day, adding: "It is a proud day, it's an incredibly proud day.

"When you're in Ukraine and you hear Ukrainians talk about our country and what it means to them, that's the same pride everyone should have.

"I have the great pleasure in this job of travelling round the world and hearing how other people talk about what it means to be English, what we stand for, and I think we need to have that same pride too."

Sir Keir similarly said St George's Day was "a day to celebrate and that is what we're all doing on St George's Day.

"I think that is both sentimental - in the sense of our history, our values our traditions - but, for me, bound up with that sense of service to our country.

"A bank holiday would be very nice but I think that, with the economy where it is at the moment, we have to celebrate in-and-around the work that we're doing, because we need to absolutely take our country forward.

"What I want to do, if we're privileged enough to come into government, is to have a government of service to the country and have a decade of national renewal - and that would fulfil St George's Day's promise."

Campaigners to make St George's Day on 23rd April a bank holiday have previously argued that the UK has fewer bank holidays per year than other major industrialised nations. The average across European Union countries is 11.

Up until 1834, there were 33 public holidays in the UK but these day England and Wales typically get eight.

Scotland has an additional bank holiday to celebrate St Andrew's Day on 2 December. Northern Ireland has two extra bank holidays to mark St Patrick's Day on 17 March and the Battle of the Boyne in July.

In 2022, then-Welsh Secretary Sir Robert Buckland said he was in favour of making St David's Day a holiday in Wales - but that another bank holiday should be scrapped to make room for a 1 March celebration.

In the same year, workers got an extra bank holiday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.

At the time, business leaders urged the prime minister to make the bank holiday permanent arguing it would boost the economy.

Government modelling put the cost of an extra bank holiday at £1.36bn, while accountancy firm PwC estimated the figure would be closer to £831m.
