Hi. I'm Sam the skunk. Skunks are native to both North and South Ameica. We are not found anywhere else. There are some wild skunks in the U.K, but these escaped from peoples homes, because skunks can be kept as pets. Most people think that skunks spray that awful smelling stuff from these two glands on either side of the anus every time we are threatened. That's actually not true as the glands only hold enough for 6 sprays and then it takes ten more days for my body to produce more. When I am threatened by a predator I will often stamp my feet, and hiss and jump around as if I am going to spray and this alone will scare off most predators. Even big guys like wolves are afraid of me because they know that if I spray them they won't be able to get rid of that smell on their fur for months. It won't wash off if the predator goes into a river or lake. Only special chemicals can remove my stink. In the old days anyone who had my stink on them had to burn their clothes!
