New ImageHost Grabber for Firefox Quantum: Host Grabber++

There is a new image host grabber in town for Firefox Quantum:

Still in beta, but the version 0.7 released today is usable.

I am not affiliated with this project (yet). The source code looks very promising and the person behind it seems to be very good at his job. He does all the things I was too lazy to do with imgding (tests, hostfile, ...).

I am running a old Dell Vostro laptop, with Linux Ubuntu 18.04.

I generally use the Google Chrome and Opera browsers, but also have Firefox; which came as part of the Linus Ubuntu set-up.

Here is my current version of Firefox; 76.0.1 64 bit.



I have also loaded the Host Grabber ++ by Rhadamanthe to Firefox.



Host Grabber works wonderfully well at x_ham. Images are downloaded in full size, under the sequential file names assigned by the x_ham server. They appear in the same sort-order that you see in the x_ham gallery; exactly what I want.

Unfortunately, Host Grabber does not work the same way at imagefap. Galleries that appear there with their original, sequential file numbers, download in an absolute mess (with file numbers derived from the imagefap servers).

Here is an example of a target gallery with sequential file numbers.



Here is what I get when I ask Host Grabber to extract and download



The downloaded images as they appear in my folder. An absolute mess that is not worth saving; unless the material is very special and merits an hour of hand sorting and renaming.



Question:

Is there some way to configure Host Grabber to download the imagefap photos in the original sort-order?

I really don't mind if the file names/numbers are changed, as long as the images download in the same order as I see them in the imagefap thumbnail gallery.

Any help would be much appreciated!

No, there is no way to influence the filename. The file name is taken from the image URL.

This is the main issue preventing to use Host Grabber++. I created a issue/request for this here:

Maybe if you leave a comment there it would increase the chance of getting it implemented.

I see that I must register/open an account in order to add to the conversation. Since I am not very "IT savy", I'm not sure I will be able to express my concerns in a way that the Developer will find useful.

Based on his response to your request, I suspect that he is not a collector of photo-galleries of the sequential type. He seems to have no appreciation for the fact that some galleries tell a story, and need to be downloaded in a particular order.

His response suggests that he has never actually tried to use his product; except to grab and dump a web-page full of data.

I think your imgding program is better at meeting User needs and expectations. It would sure be great if it could be run on a "stand-alone" basis outside the VEF launch-pad.

Yes, I thought registration might be a hurdle. Github is a reputable site, even if now owned by Microsoft. Special knowledge should not be required to contribute to an issue, every input is valued. But please don't bother any further, its not really necessary.

At least he is thinking about it. I understand some of his reasoning and the difficulties involved. I expect he will do the positioning prefixing though.

My apologies . . .

It would appear that I erroneously jumped to the conclusion that imgding only worked in conjunction with VEF folders, because it was designed to extract and download from hosts commonly used here.

I now see that my attempts to invoke imgding on a stand-alone basis (using Google Chrome) failed because I was asking it to download from folders hosted at commercial web-sites for which it is not intended (eg: x_ham, imagefap, etc.).

It's over 6 months since last post. I needed a grabber bc doing total reinstall on a machine, came here for tips. Only need FF or PM basics, the hosts used here. What, if anything, can actually be installed now & works?

IHG cannot be got or installed anymore afaics.

I may try the beta Host Grabber halvar suggested. But. I am usually last one about privacy. Really don't give a fig. But in FF, developer has to state what "permissions" are granted. The last one is:

"Access your data for all websites".

Privacy mavens, what do you say? Does he mean sites you dl from with his app? or does he mean what he says?

I think that is indeed because of the different image host sites it would need to access to download all the pictures. (you can put the add-on to inactive when you're not using it and turn it on when you do)

Do the failed pics work when you just click the thumbs? If you want i can try it on a post that failed for you, for comparison.
