"Sven Forkbeard" -- now that's just awesome. Now what do you have? "Charles the Chinless"? Harry is the royal best equipped to carry on the great traditions of royal names... "Harry Firecrotch" would mix the blue blood with a little claret.

King Edmund Ironside organised such coherent resistance to Cnut and to his father Sven Forkbeard as occurred; it was remarkably little given that the Vikings were amphibious marines fighting in a foreign land and the Anglo-Saxons were on their home turf. The Vikings slightly subverted their lomg established reputation and marched through England with comprehending moderation; communities which gave in without a fight were well treated and this enabled the Vikings to move through English territory fast and with few set piece battles. Only the citizens of London repelled them at first and when they saw how little resistence was being shown elsewhere they soon gave in, for fear of reprisals if they held out when no one else did.

It was after Eathelred the Unready, Edmund's father, valiantly ran away to France that Edmund emerged as a much more credible military figure than his impulsive, erratic and timid-brave father. Unfortunately, a lot of Edmund's strength was spent on civil war with Saxons who had tamely submitted to Cnut, but weren't tame at all when Edmund attempted to pull them up for treason. Edmund defeated the Vikings at Brentford and raised the AD1015 siege of London, but was defeated himself at Assendun and made a treaty with Cnut, accepting Wessex and ceding Mercia and East Anglia to the Vikings. He died about 6 months later and Wessex fell into Cnut's lap as well. Cnut was notable for the moderation of his rule, in which he refrained from mass reprisals even when defeated populations were forced to surrender at discretion; I would go so far as to say he showed mercy...if people laid down their arms for real. But he wasn't soft; with him, you got one chance to go hands up, never two chances.

How nice to see Scottish players in the GBR Women's football team tonight-it is a shame the Men's game had to lose out. GBR 1 Brazil 0-what a result that is. Next up, the quarter finals and Canada!
