As I recall, in the 70's, Eddie Van Halen was our Eddie Van Halen. Van Halen was released in early 1978 and Van Halen II was released in 1979.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mark Knopfler and Mason Williams are not on that list. Your list is invalid.

If you go up to the '80's, the lack of Prince is also a problem.

Did you mean Carlos Santana?

Jimi Hendrix and Billy Gibbons both need to be a lot higher.

Frampton doesn't deserve to be that high.

my comment on Ted and EVH given all responses seem to think i was comparing talent, i was talking about "timeframe" when previous posts by other members were comparing Ted to guitarist that came later in the 80s,
90's ect.
yes, Van Halen came out in 78, i bought the album when it was new.
i'll make this my last effort to clarify:
in the early/mid 1970s Ted was on top of Live Venues, his popularity (in my view) was due to his guitar solo's given he didnt have a hit song(s) and while his records sold well there wasnt really a hit album -- by this i mean top ten.
most other artist/bands who were on top (and there were many) had 'hits'.
Eddie was also known for solos.............the only comparison i was making.
when i then asked you to name your favorites it wasnt to say "who's better than Ted"
or anyone else, i was just talking music from the era.(my mistake)
dont get the wrong impression, i'm not blamming you for my inability to communicate,
i used to be married so i'm well aware of my shortcomings..........

That list isn't in any specific order. It's ridiculous to think so. I think I put four guys who's names started with the letter "A" together.

It's definitely not inclusive, as the "and so on" would imply. It's just 37 guys off the top of my head who I think are better guitarists than Nugent. All 37 I believe recorded before Edward Van Halen. Mark Knopfler's debut was 1978, same year as EVH. SRV debuted some 5 years after EVH. Those two, along with Rhodes, was not an oversight.

Actually thought about adding Mason Williams. However, outside of Classical Gas, most folks are hard pressed to remember any other recording. Kind of looked like a reach at that point.

I reckon the follow ups don't make much sense now either.

GD&N mods, feel free to kill my posts that are now out of context.

OK. I guess I got confused by the numbers.

Quote:
SRV debuted some 5 years after EVH.
His first recordings were in 1970 with Cast of Thousands. He was in a lot of bands in the 70's, several which recorded records but admittedly, none really hit until Double Trouble had some national success in 1983. That band had been around since 1978. He was apparently well known in the Austin music scene in the 1970's and even did some touring. I guess if you only count national success, 1983 was his first year.

Of course, the Van Halen that hit it big in 1978 had been around in that configuration since 1974; 1972 if you include the time before Roth joined the band. Their break came when Rodney Bingenheimer persuaded Gene Simmons to catch one of their shows. He liked them and helped them get a record deal.

I stopped shavin' and I was 18, had a little scraggly beard, really looked like a hippie. I had long hair, and it started gettin' kinky, matted up. Then two weeks before, I stopped eating any food with nutritional value. I just had chips, Pepsi, beer-stuff I never touched-buttered poop, little jars of Polish sausages, and I'd drink the syrup, I was this side of death, Then a week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. poop, piss the whole shot. My pants got crusted up.

So I went in, and those guys in uniform couldn't believe the smell. They were ridiculin' me and pushin' me around and I was cryin', but all the time I was laughin' to myself. When they stuck the needle in my arm for the blood test I passed out, and when I came to they were kicking me into the wall. Then they made everybody take off their pants, and I did, and this sergeant says, "Oh my God, put those back on! You fucking swine you!" Then they had a urine test and I couldn't piss, But my poop was just like ooze, man, so I poop in the cup and put it on the counter. I had poop on my hand and my arm. The guy almost puked. I was so proud. I knew I had these chumps beat. The last thing I remember was wakin' up in the ear test booth and they were sweepin' up. So I went home and cleaned up.

But you know the funny thing about it? I'd make an incredible army man. I'd be a colonel before you knew what hit you, and I'd have the baddest bunch of motherfuckin' killers you'd ever seen in my platoon. But I just wasn't into it.

I just saw a guitarist who never gets the press or recognition he deserves and is a contemporary of the Nuge; Donald Roeser, aka Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult. I saw them Tuesday night and he can flat out play. And it was obvious that he was having a good time doing it.

And hasn't really done anything noteworthy since 1984, both the album and the year. Love the DLR years but let's face it, Van Halen the band was emasculated when Diamond Dave left. The trouble is that Dave pretty much cut his own nuts off in the process. Even Vai and Sheehan - musicians who strike fear in the hearts of other musicians - couldn't help him. It was like one of those baseball trades where both teams get screwed. Van Halen and Van Hagar are two different bands. I liked Sammy's solo stuff but the band lost all its fire when Dave left and Sammy joined. Then Dave becomes a buffoon, they invite him back and bench Mike Anthony in favor of the fat kid. EVH is still a great player - loved him on Kimmel - but the band should just hang it up.
