Hey brianwp, actually I'm down here in South Brunswick Township. I'm a Chopin man as well, no question. sohtatexas, you are a mad beast with all these phenomenal posts! Thanks for providing the link to the Chopin post. Really appreciate it.
If I had to pick just one recording of the Ballade, I'd have to go with good old Artur Rubinstein (I've got it on vinyl). I also have a relatively obscure recording of the Preludes by James Tocco, my teacher at Indiana University. (There's a recent youtube clip of Tocco playing Ravel which is really awesome.) I've also heard a recording of the Fantasie-Impromptu that I really really like by the Russian pianist Yevgeny Kissin.
