Default On This Day In History

April 11th 2020

This one might have saved a lot of grief...

-- 1951 - U.S.A. General Douglas MacArthur

1951 : President Harry S Truman has fired General Douglas MacArthur as commander of United Nations and US forces in the Far East after General Douglas MacArthur has made public statements calling for an attack on mainland China unless Communist forces laid down their arms in Korea. The president is still hoping for a peaceful settlement.

---------------

I remember this one from the history books but Keefer Sutherland told me parts of it as well. His dad Donald lived nextdoor to Gerald Bull...

-- 1990 - UK "Supergun" Barrel Seized

1990 : Customs officers in Middlesbrough seize the barrel ( 130 feet long ) of a "Supergun" on a ship bound for Iraq. A gun barrel of this length would give a "Supergun" the range of approximately 600 miles.
--------------'

-- 1961 - Israel Adolf Eichmann

1961 : Adolf Eichmann went on trial in an Israeli courthouse today. accused of mass murder and the helping in the death of millions of Jews in German Concentration Camps during World War II.

A small historical detail that often goes unmentioned is that the Buchenwald inmates actually freed themselves.

The approaching US troops anabled the self-liberation by the camp's own resistance movement by tying local Wehrmacht and SS forces. When US troops finally arrived in Buchenwald, they found the camp already liberated and the SS personnel tied up and guarded by armed camp inmates.

Btw, the Buchenwald resistance movement was founded and organised by anti-fascists and communists. Chairman of the 'International Camp Committee' was the communist Walter Bartel.

That's one story Nobody. There's another that a Polish Engineer had secretly made a radio and once the SS started pulling out and trying to move inmates with them broadcast HELP messages which were picked up by the Americans who sent elements of 6th US Division in to help.

I suspect there were very few supporters of the fascists in the place.

Incidentally after the war the Soviet NKVD used the camp to imprison anti communist dissenters and facists.

Well, that is actually not another story but part of the same story.

Precisely.

Yes, there was a Soviet internment camp on the site of the former KZ Buchenwald. But there were a lot of internment camps after the war, for quite understandable reasons. And sometimes people acted out of necessity. For exapmple, the US used the site of the former KZ Dachau for the same purpose, and with comparable methods and results.

On this day in history, the portable typewriter was patented. What would VEF or the internet have been if no one had invented a typewriter?

On this day in history, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died. He was, for all his faults, a key founder of the modern world and a critically important leader in the world's fight to crush fascism and crush the murderers who had soaked the world in innocent blood.

I think we have let him down and we have let our greatest generation down. But there is always another choice and we can still change, and show ourselves worthy to be descended from our ancestors.
