The Star Wars Episode 8 Thread - Page 5

It is done. They have released the first official Teaser Trailer for Star Wars: Episode 8. The YouTube link is : <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB4I68XVPzQ> At the end, Luke Skywalker says that the Jedi must end, name-checking the movie title.

So this opens up some serious questions: Will Luke die in combat? Or will he teach Rey something different from Yoda before he dies of natural causes? Will he disappear as he dies, and return to the Force as a Force-Ghost? (cf. Anakin and Obi-Wan appearing that way with Yoda in some movies)

We are only beginning to learn what is in this movie installment, and I have a feeling that the combat vehicles such as fighters, capital ships, and AT-AT walkers will be secondary.

As long as they try new things with Episode 8 I'll be happy. The Force Awakens was essentially a reboot/remake of A New Hope (although a well done and enjoyable reboot of ANH) and Rogue One was just drab, lifeless, recycled rubbish.

I hope Disney take a gamble with this and don't play it safe again, the nostalgia will only last so for long if they keep relying on that.

@Everyone: Thank you for keeping this thread alive through perusing it.

I went to my extended family's Easter gathering yesterday, and my Millennial second cousin said that she and all her friends are happy to see Episode 8 getting ready to hit the screens. And they even had a Star Wars Party, with an R2-D2 cake. My cousin specifically wants to know about Rey's parentage: "I don't think she's a Kenobi, but..."

She too thinks the combat vehicles like the larger AT-AT walkers will be secondary.

In the new teaser trailer, we are shown something that looks like the insignia of the Jedi, and someone's fingers briefly tracing it. Rumors on YouTube say that Luke may be a "Grey Jedi" in Episode 8...

@footstep: One of the strangest things happened the Saturday before Easter. At the family gathering, where my Millennial cousin talked of the R2-D2 party and Rey's lineage, there was another relative who talked to me about Star Wars. This was my other cousin's husband, who with facial hair and longer blonde hair would resemble Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe, but who currently resembles Luke Skywalker in the official trailer, if he trimmed his beard a little.

Plus my parents in the '70s and '80s looked more like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, and in a school play of the '80s, we did a parody of Star Wars where I played "Dude Skyrocket" and my friend (who himself resembled Hayden Christensen!) played the Vader-like villain "Dirt Nerdo"... Yeah, I kinda have a nerdy family, but we're now uber-cool nerds.

They are still talking about the 2-3 trailers available on YouTube, with rumors that we will see at least 1 more by summer. Luke's cryptic remark about "It's time for the Jedi... to end" is for everyone to figure out on their own, until they actually see the movie. At least, that's my take on his hard-hitting line of dialogue in the trailer(s) I have seen.

I would be astounded to see Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin as Force-ghosts trying to communicate with Rey, if she really is going to be a Jedi and/or related to Obi-Wan or Anakin biologically. But the rumor that she will really be a reincarnation of Anakin as The Chosen One is still all over YouTube...

As for "Social Justice Wars", it's true that they wanted to have diversity in the movies. In the '70s, Carrie Fisher took charge and blasted Stormtroopers; now they are going to have Rey as a Jedi, even if feminists consider laser guns and/or light sabers as phallic symbols. Finn being a Resistance trooper and/or knowing how to fight with a light saber is just karma for the First Order, having kidnapped him from his family and raised him to be little better than a draft-slave for the bad guys. As he told Captain Phasma, "I'm In Charge!"

Now we will see if they emphasize the common humanity of Kylo Ren, and to see if he can be turned to the Light Side, despite his horrific crime of killing his father Han Solo. Anakin would have to talk to him first about this, because Anakin killed the Younglings and assaulted his friends Obi-Wan and Mace Windu from the Jedi Council. It would not be surprising that they do something in Episode 8 or Episode 9 even about Kylo Ren's sudden redemption from the Dark Side.

But the above is just my take on what I have seen in the past few weeks about the movie.
