Default The VEF Philosophy Club

Thread starter

Interested in talking about Aristotelian Ethics?

Have a favorite philosopher that has provided you with insights that you'd like to discuss?

Know anything about metaphysics or epistemology?

This thread is the place on VEF to do it!

There are other threads dedicated to talking about politics and religion (talk about them here if ya' like -- in a theoretical way that is ) but I'd like to stick to answering some of the most common questions in the world of philosophy.

"Bruce here is studying Hegilian philosophy and also in charge of the sheep dip!"
Is this the right room for an existential argument?

I'd love to add the Monty Python song but it's too long to type out...so I copied it and printed it here instead.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table

David Hume could out-consume
Schopenhauer and Hegel
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as sloshed as Schlegel

There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill
Plato, they say, could stick it away
Half a crate of whiskey every day

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart
"I drink, therefore I am"

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed
A lovely little thinker
But a bugger when he's pissed

Of course you could argue that the VEF philosophy is:
Post, comment, scan, discuss...the anti philosophy is lurk, ogle, do bugger all in which case all can PISS OFF!!

I've been reading "I And Thou" by Tielhard de Chardin, since my 20s.
It's covered in old brown tape to strengthen the cover edges and spine.

I've got upto Page 5 once, in one sitting/reading.

But have to keep re-starting it every time I return to it.

I had a go at Schopenhauer's "Die Welt als Wille und Forstellung" [ The World As Will And Representation ] last year.

According to Schopenhauer, the entire world is the representation of a single Will, of which our individual wills are phenomena.

Schopenhauer used the word "will" as a human's most familiar designation for the concept that can also be signified by other words such as "desire," "striving," "wanting," "effort," and "urging."

Schopenhauer's philosophy holds that all nature, including man, is the expression of an insatiable will to life.

It is through the will that mankind finds all their suffering. Desire for more is what causes this suffering.

And it's because of this "desire" that you're lurking around a wanking forum !!!

A few words about Platon.

Platon was mostly unemployed and a lazy bugger. He is generally regarded as one of the great thinkers. Like the rest of the Athenian aristocracy, he was a convinced pedo who lived on the dole. They robbed and beat up old folks because they had to. We will discuss this in much more detail later on. I will now come to the most important part.

One day he let a squeaky fart in a drunken stupor, and everyone thought that was philosophy. In fact, he was just an imaginary friend. This was the birth of metaphysics.

Then he wrote numerous plagiarism in order to quickly get rich and forced innocent people to live in dark caves. The poor bastards were put in shackles and had to watch a wall that didn't work, day and night 24/7/365. This is called the Cave Allegory, but only by swinish cliques of anti-social elements, the undisputed public enemy number one. But I digress. Then he invented platonic love because at that moment he had been rejected by a bunch of bearded men. Peter the Great used this stochastic argument in order to introduce a beard tax in Russia. More on that later.

Then e made his yodel diploma. Then he invented the Academy formerly known as Blackwater, but the term academics is only used by dubious persons. Most call them sluggards, level drinkers, professional liars or worthless nothings. They end up in politics or prison. But mostly they are also executed on the spot. So, that didn't work either. And this, Ladies and Gentleman, is why we wait before moving on.

'It's not the consciousness that determines the existence, but the social existence that determines the consciousness, true story.' - Abraham Lincoln.
