I use HJSplit all the time to join .001/.002 files, but is it the same for 01.avi/02.avi etc? I just tried Checksum for the first time but I'm buggered if I know what it did.

That could confuse a stupid person...

Sorry I thought that was what you meant, the .001 files etc.
I'm not sure about 01.avi then, hopefully someone else will come up with a solution soon.

look like normal files where e.g. single scenes are edit out and stored as "01.avi", "02.avi", ... files, all able to run at a mediaplayer

That probably means that the divx 5 codec is not installed.
You really need software like Virtualdub, Avidemux or erightsoft Super in order to join such files. You can't join them with file splitters like HJsplit.

While joining, did you check that Audio and Video are set to "Direct Stream Copy" instead of "Compression"?

It sounds like you want the software to compress the joined file with a new setting, what's not necessary in my opinion.

This one is puzzling me have tried 7z that deals with most things . standard windows zip , renaming to 001,002 etc there must be a specific programe to use for these?

.z01, .z02 etc are split ZIP files. You must extract the accompanying zip file. 7zip will find the corresponding .z01 etc. files.

I made those files using winzip, a free 30 day trial is available from their website, just download all the parts to the same place and use winzip to extract the .zip file it will then extract the whole lot together.
