Who makes a film a Must See?
This thread comes out of my comments on "What film are you watching?"
I mentioned that I'd just watched Bob Hoskins in Mona Lisa (one I'd seen before) and couldn't call to mind a film in which he'd disappointed in his performance. Say what you will about "Who framed Roger Rabbit", or "Brazil", but (IMHO) Hoskins' turn cannot be faulted. I have to say the same about Anthony Hopkins. He shows unfailing judgment in choosing those scripts/vehicles that showcase his ability to its finest. Dame Maggie Smith? Why not? So, say who (to you) calls you to attend, and never seems to let you down. PS For Hoskins fans, look for Inserts with (also) Richard Dreyfus and Jessica Harper. Made in 1974, it should have been a stage play, given the dramatic arc and single set. Oh, and it's nominally about shooting a stag film. Great performances; a real gem.

There aren't any actors/actresses that make a film a must-see for me, but there are a couple of directors that I always check out: Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler) does great work, I'll be watching his new movie Black Swan in a day or two; and Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Dead or Alive, Visitor Q) never disappoints me.

Mr Depp
Nothing starring Mr Depp is going to be boring, even if the story is unbelievably stupid and most of the other cast are dull
I read he moved his family to France, just to escape the Hollywood dimwits -- is that true? |

For myself,
These are 10 actors off the top of my head who I've gone out of my way too see all their work. A few legends and a few who I consider under rated,

A whole host of issues, from casting to the director and an individuals ability to hold your attention. Plus yourself and the type and style of film you like.

Clint Eastwood, either acting or directing.
Adam Sandler always makes me laugh. Jodie Foster usually does no wrong either. Darth Vader. |

I can't think of anyone for whom their appearance, no matter how prominent in a film makes it "must-see". Even actors I really admire like DeNiro, Caine, Streep and Hoffman have made populist rubbish I wouldn't dream of paying to see.

Juliette Binoche. Even The English Patient was worth sitting through because she was in it.
