Batgirl vs. Catwoman
I was ten years old (ahh, shut up !) when Yvonne Craig debuted as Batgirl.
Back then, I had to consider this difficult question: Batgirl (Yvonne Craig) or Catwoman (Julie Newmar) ? I thought all these years later, I could make a objective, dispassionate choice. First, the raw statistics: Yvonne Born: Yvonne Joyce Craig Date of Birth: 16 May 1937 Place of Birth: Taylorville, Illinois, USA Height: 5' 4" (1.63 m) Weight: 109 lbs Measurements: 37-23-35 Julie Born: Julia Chalene Newmeyer Date of Birth: 16 August 1933 Place of Birth: Los Angeles, California USA Height: 5' 11" (1.80m) Weight: 145 pounds Measurements: 38-23-38 Yeee-ooouch ! If figures don't lie, this is a virtual deadheat. Some other considerations: Yvonne was Ranked #7 on Wizard magazine's "Sexiest Women of TV" list (March 2008). Yvonne was enrolled in the famed Edith James School. Her passion for dance was on its way to becoming fulfilled, as she turned out to be a most promising student. Starring in a Christmas show at the School, she caught the expert eye of a major figure of the dance world of the times: prima ballerina Alexandra Danilova. Ms. Danilova was so impressed that she arranged auditions for Yvonne before the august presence of George Balanchine at the School of American Ballet and Fergei J. Denham of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, nothing less. Amazingly, both were impressed and accepted Yvonne in their respective ranks. Yvonne opted for the Ballet Russe, beginning training in 1954, as one of their youngest pupils. Julie Newmar was a student of piano, dance, and classical ballet as a child. The brainy beauty, with a reported IQ of 135, completed high school at age 15 and eventually enrolled at UCLA. While still a teenager, Newmar went to work in films, appearing in musicals and costume dramas such as Just for You (1952; with Bing Crosby), Serpent of the Nile (1953; with Rhonda Fleming and Raymond Burr), and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954; with Jane Powell). Julie invented and marketed her own brand of pantyhose in the 1970s & 1980s. She holds three U.S patents for her lingerie. She gave birth to her only child, a son, while she was in her late 40s. Ms. Newmar has 37" legs (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine) ! Looks like it's too close to call. Both are exceptionally gifted. And speaking of exceptional gifts, let's consider the visual evidence: Yvonne Julie Call me a coward, but after all these years, I STILL can't choose between the two ! Where's King Solomon when you need him ? When we got married my wife told me I was one in a million. I found out she was right! - Rodney Dangerfield (1921-2004) |

The Dilemma - Cat vs. Bat?
Well, I'm no Solomon, but I'll wade in where jokers and riddlers fear to tread
Mr. Danger has done a great job of listing the many qualities of each actress which would account for male "enthusiasm"... All I can add to the equation is personal experience (bias by anecdote!). Yvonne Craig seemed very down to earth in person; perhaps due to an upbringing in the heartland. We'll call her the "Maryann" of the contest. Julie Newmar, on the other hand, had sort of an otherworldly quality about her... the painted on eyebrows and high hairline, the vacant expression; the clinical, seemingly disinterested way she regarded the world around her... I wasn't sure if it was diva attitude or the onset of dementia. Both were otherwise quite attractive for women of their ages. My answer? For marriage and family - Yvonne For a really intense, fingernails in your shoulderblades, one night stand - Julie These fantasies center on the women as they looked in Batman, natch.
