CD OR VINYL?
Which do you prefer & why? In terms of sound quality, which format do you feel delivers the ultimate in audio? Do you think the compact disc will continue in future? Is vinyl a superior investment? All responses greatly appreciated! Thank you.

well, I do like that nostalgic crackle you get when you put the needle on the vinyl.
As to what sounds better - ??? - I dunno - they all sound good when you stoned.

For music just to have, CD, which is already slowly on the way out with being able to download music and store on a hard drive or iPod. But nothing beats vinyl for collecting music, it feels like you actually have something whereas a CD feels a bit impersonal

Put me down as a vote for vinyl. I'm not a strict purist as I have most of my music now as mp3 for convenience. But I am of an age where I was buying records since the mid 70's and enjoy having a vinyl collection purely for asthetic reasons now.
The following albums represent styles of covers that could not possibly have the same effect on cd Rolling Stones - Satanic Majesties Request (with 3D cover) Beatles - White Album (with all inserts) Led Zeppelin - 3 (with "wheel" cover) Beggars Opera - Pathfinder (with fold out 6 panel poster cover) Quintessense - Self Titled (with dye cut cover) Picture Disc and Coloured vinyl records. And those Crass Punk LP's that had Newspaper type covers. |

I'm still waiting to see how the compact disc does before I upgrade from my 8-track collection :P

I still have my old KISS, Scorpions and a few other metal albums on vinyl as they bring back my youth. For ease of storage the CD is pretty much ideal. |

Soundwise 12"/ 45 rpm Maxi-single gives best sound from my system. I have 90% vinyl 10% Cd`s , vinyl is not so handy when listening "The Wall" or "Live bursting out".
When looking cover-art, LP is superior, especially with gatefold sleeves and lyrics-sheet etc. I listen lots of dub and drum`n`bass, so vinyl is number one for me. As a teen, when I or some of my friends had bought a new LP, we gathered together and listened it, maybe taped it too, nice memories! Nowadays I just dream about having an own JukeBox, with all those weird and cool surf-instrumental 7" singles in it! DJ culture and underground punk-rock/hardcore-bands have practically kept vinyl alive through all those very bad years. Maybe without them vinyl had died completely, except at Jamaica, where they have always pressed vinyl records. You could have ALL Springsteen records as audiophile, high-quality pressings, best possible stereo and speaker-system, maybe an acoustic listening room too. Or you could be a farmer, with few old dusty Bruce-tapes on your pick-up "car-stereo", you sing with Bruce when driving, there`s lots of extra noise from car. They are both enjoying it, so It`s music that matters. Still, I vote for vinyl!

Nothing beats vinyl when it comes to terms of "Natural Sound" - playing well-maintained vinyls on my Thorens turntable with Goldring-cartridge...this is heaven on earth
Only accept CDīs or MP3 when being on vacation

I forgot to mention earlier, you can scratch either, and vinyl is still OK to play, but with CD it stall the computer, jams the CD player,
but a turntable you can just nudge it

As a child of the sixties, vinyl was the only true option, as such. The introduction of cartridge/tape didn't influence my choice and it wasn't until the mid-nineties that I bought my first c.d player - The Division Bell/Pink Floyd, being my first c.d. purchase. Now, although I have an extensive vinyl collection, many have been replaced by c.d's.
C.D's. are convenient to use, easier than vinyl to store and of course you can play them in the car. So for me, c.d's would be my first choice today. Sound quality too, is superior. My only complaint is the 'blurb' accompanying c.d's is often so small as to be virtually unreadable and the plastic c.d cases are far too flimsy.
