A wonderful story that somebody (come on, Ken Loach) should make into a film one day.
A great man and a wonderful ambassador for rugby league. His biography 'Born On The Wrong Side' is an excellent read

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to all who have posted notices and obituaries here these last couple of months.
Having returned to VEF, after an unwanted break due to my lack of internet connection and several computer problems, it has been interesting catching up on what's been going on, but so sad to see so many well known, and loved, people, finding their way here in the RIP thread. The late Sir Henry Cooper, Anna Massey, and Robert Robinson to name just a couple.

All will be sadly missed!

Anyway, THANKYOU to all who have posted in the meantime.

Jerry Lieber, who with partner Mike Stoller, wrote many of the songs that help define the sound of early rock and roll died Tuesday at the age of 78. Lieber and Stoller first hit with "Hound Dog" which was written for blues singer Big Mama Thornton. After Elvis Presley appropriated an altered version of the song, Lieber and Stoller moved into the world of rock and roll as songwriters and the first independent producing team.

Among the song written by or produced by Lieber and Stolller are "Jailhouse Rock" and "Santa Claus is Back in Town" for Elvis, "Yakety Yak," "Searchin'," "Young Blood" and others for the Coasters, "There Goes My Baby," "Up on the Roof," "Save The Last Dance for Me" and others for the Drifters and "Spanish Harlem" and "Stand By Me" for Ben E. Jack Layton Leader of the Official Opposition, Canadian Parliament. Passed away from cancer.

Under his leadership the New Democratic Party achieved Official Opposition status for the first time since its formation in 1961. Political life ran deep for Jack Layton. His mother, Doris Elizabeth Steeves, is a grand-niece of William Steeves, a Father of Confederation, and his father, Robert Layton, was a Progressive Conservative MP. His wife, Olivia Chow, is the MP for the riding of Trinity—Spadina.

Although I am not a supporter of the NDP platform, I did admire his leadership abilities and his commitment to his ideals.

Former MLB Player Mike Flanagan has passed away at the age of 59. Flanagan made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1975. He pitched for the O's for the next 11 years, was named an All-Star in 1978 and won the Cy Young award in 1979. That was his best season as he posted a record of 23-9 with an ERA of 3.09. The O's lost in the World Series to the Pirates in that same year. Flanagan was later traded to the Toronto Blue Jays and ended his career in 1992 back with the Orioles. He had a career record of 167-143 and an ERA of 3.90 w/ 1491 strikeouts. His post-playing days included stints as the Orioles pitching coach and also as a television analyst on their TV broadcasts. He was always known as an affable, witty and genuinely nice guy and he will be missed by the baseball community. RIP Mike Flanagan.
