I know some people on the fringes of the movie business. I have been told there are sometimes non-creative people involved (often producers-they find the money) who want to leave their mark on a film, although it usually manifests as using a particular actor/actress that may not really fit a part. Sometimes it manifests as a changed story line to fit the producer's personal or political views. I had a friend get a green light on a TV show about an unwed teenage mom and her struggle to survive; she has a gay male friend that she relies on. It was tragic, honest, contemporary and funny at the same time. The green light conditioned that the woman be 26-40, divorced, and the friend be straight, just, you know, a "little tweak". However, these "conditions" usually manifest in the planning stages of the film. The movie "Brazil" had 2 endings. One (dumbed down) for the American audiences, who always want a happy ending-according to movie executives. And the one the rest of the world saw. The latter received accolades while the former was held back in theatrical release until it was tested in the European market. The movie is such a fantastical romp that it has your head exploding anyway. And Gilliam fans know they are in for something outside of the Hollywood norm when they buy their ticket. I have to feel that this edit was a personal bias against director Terry Gilliam rather than concern for the audience. I did see the European release in a theater that showed foreign films. When I bought the VHS tape (remember those) it was the American release and the ending was changed. No internet back then so it took me a while to find out why. But this is what I want to know! What other movies have you noticed differences in?

Oh well , i won`t talk about the pivotal missing scene from the Vanilla Sky DVD then , which showed our capped toothed hero being eaten alive by dung beatles Although i`m not surprised as that version of the film was only in my head Seriously , i think there was certainly a missing scene from the Dark Knight Returns. It`s where the Joker is in the prison cell seemingly about to get beaten up by the sadistic cop one second , then the next he`s outside the cell with a blade to the cops throat When i first saw the film i was convinced for a minute that the cop must have been in on it with the Joker Why weren`t we shown a scene that connects the two events Very weird , and for me the only disjointed flaw in a pretty much perfect film.

This cut happened to "American Graffitti" while it was still in theaters. There is a scene where Milner and Carol are walking through the junkyard and she trys to hold his hand. After a second he realizes what they're doing and says "Grody" pulling his hand away. This of course upsets Carol, she runs off climbs the fence out of the junkyard and locks herself in the Deuce Coupe. When Milner gets back to the car he finds himself locked out and reaches in his pocket for the keys... that he left in the ignition. In order to get in Carol forces him to say "Carols not Grody, she's bitchin'."
Now I've seen "AG" umpteen times including multiple times in theaters, but in all but the first time I saw it that scene ends with Milner pulling his hand away.

Trainspotting
Ahhhhhh it has happened once again kids.
I am beginning to wonder if Netfilx (mail order movie company-do you have that in Europe?) has its own versions of films Today I present "Trainspotting". A fabulous film that Presidential hopeful Bob Dole said glorified drug use-if you've seen "Trainspotting" you know Bob Dole didn't-and anyway he didn't win. I used to own the movie (I still own the soundtrack) but the Ex wife took "my" movie as "ours" and made it "hers" during the divorce proceedings; then she threw it away because it reminder "her" too much of "me"-seems fair But I digress! The GF and I rented the disc from Netflix and lo and behold....there was a scene not quite kosher in Xexemedes' memory. In my (previous) copy: Renton, Ewan McGregor, (main character) had a job interview but he sent his friend Spud, Ewen Bremmer, to blow the interview. Renton narrates about how it has to look like he is trying. In the Netflix version it was Spud going for his own job interview with Renton telling him to look like he was trying. In both versions Renton gives Spud some speed before going in and in both versions Renton narrates, after the interview, how Spud messed it up good and proper. The scene was far funnier and much more clever, IMHO, to have Spud taking the interview for Renton. It added an interesting nuance in the film about the inner workings of the drug addict's mind. Having Spud blow the interview for himself just kind of makes Spud look more like an idiot, which he was. Both this scene change and the afore mentioned change in "Falling Down" seem to dumb down the film for the audience, taking away a subtle complexity that the writer and/or director felt should be there-and that, ladies and gentleman, really burns my cheese. Until again my fellow movie sleuths

Whether or not there's a different version internationally, I don't know, but the version I've described above is the only one I know to. |

Not sure whether this is an international thing or TV vs theater thing or what, but there's a line from Aliens: "... they don't fuck each other over for a percentage." But I remember in the theatrical release in the UK in 1986, it was "... they don't frig each other over for a buck."
