She Ain't Hay! (Then Again... She Is.)
.
1000 CONVICTS AND A WOMAN There I was collecting references for a post that is destined for the "Classic American Lesser Known Celebrities" thread, on an especially lovely actress who is very, very obscure. Her output was modest, and there isn't much out there on her, but then I noticed she was in a film I dug up for another actress who is destined for the "American Actresses ~ Vintage" thread (on the drawing board since last year. I still haven't prepared it because of all of these distractions), and that was exciting. Since the film was already at hand (and I didn't have to spend more time hunting), I started looking through the film to see where the obscure actress (who happens to be blond) was, and I started capturing the frames for the woman who looked like her... only the one I pegged had a lot of lines and screen time, so it couldn't have been the unknown one. Little did I realize I was collecting views of Alexandra Hay. ...... ...... Since I snipped these views, and waste not want not and all that, I'm putting them up. (So there.) These photos from above are from How Sweet It Is! (1969). Our gal is at right in the first photo, seen with Kurt Kasznar, Janice Rule and Dean Martin. If you'd like a good time, check out the theme song and intro to THE AMBUSHERS. ("Blonde hair, brunette, redheads/lying like injuns in the grass/they're comin' through the pass/and buster/you're General Custer...") I wasn't consciously aware of Ms. Hays, although I had run into her in the past. I see when she started out, she played the secretary to a character in The Ambushers (1967), which I certainly have seen (I have a soft spot for the Dean Martin "Matt Helm" films). .... Member "Babybreese" put up the better publicity shots of MODEL SHOP in 2010's Post #4. I know, because when I set out to collect images to place here, I had to get rid of my first two selections, because they turned out to be in the older post. The photos above came from Ebay, and appear to be rare. I see I have familiarity with some of the actress's films. For example, I've made reference to Model Shop (1969) in this post from a few months ago. THE SCREAMING WOMAN While our lady's output was relatively modest, Ms. Hay appeared in a good number of "big" TV shows from that time, such as Kojak, Love, American Style and Mission: Impossible, as well as some "known" films as The Love Machine, a TV-film called The Screaming Woman (not that well known, but I'm aware of it), and Otto Preminger's notorious 1968 film Skidoo, with a cast laden with stars. As Blocked! Member "Nick Danger" wrote in the thread's first post, Alexandra had a somewhat juicy part "as a young girl who discovers her car-dealer father (Jackie Gleason) is actually a onetime Mafia assassin. John Phillip Law played Stash, her hippie boyfriend." Groucho Marx plays God in SKIDOO, and Carol Channing seduces Frankie Avalon. I didn't mean to go beyond the few shots from How Sweet It Is! (Jackie Gleason's catch phrase, by the way), but the quality of those photos were lousy, so I sought out the actress's one film where she appeared as the main star: 1000 Convicts and a Woman. I was happy to see the film featured (minor) nudity which was not explored on this thread. Alexandra Hay played a spoiled and nymphomaniacal teen-aged British girl who turns to sex (one writer provided as reason: she can't sleep and is lonely), and thankfully daddy is the warden of a kind of country-club prison, so that she and reportedly seven inmates (that's slightly short of a thousand) may have "Fun and Games" (the original British title; the "Convicts" title was for the U.S. release). This is a "tasteful" exploitation film from the U.K., featuring an interracial sex scene at the end, which may have been risqué for the time, particularly in Britain. The film gave Alexandra the chance to go to town with the role. ..... .......... In 1973, Alexandra appeared in an episode of Thriller called "A Place to Die." Doctor in a small town suddenly kicks the bucket, and the new doctor with his new bride are looked upon reverentially by the townsfolk. They are Satanists, and regard the new lady arrival as a chosen disciple who will give them unlimited powers. Say! I'm familiar with another of Alexandra's films, How to Seduce a Woman (1974)... as I got into the film a little in this post. As I described in regard to the featured actress, Alexandra was also "one of four beauties marked to be bedded by hook or crook, discourtesy of the film's supposed lothario." I wanted to cap off by including views of the actress from her later period, but I see one, That Girl from Boston (1975) was apparently never released, and her very last title, Another Time, Another Place (1989), was actually filmed in 1971 and then shelved. Some seventeen years later, the filmmaker decided to only use half of the footage he had shot, incorporating it into a new film. Aside from a German TV-movie from 1978, Alexandra's last flick (also from 1978) was The One Man Jury — where cop Jack Palance is sick and tired of the bad guys being let off by the courts, and decides to implement the law in his own way. Alexandra's role appears to have been on the small side (she was given seventh billing in the end credits, and her mate from How to Seduce a Woman , the exquisite Angel Tompkins, was eighth), although our lady figures in on the finale's big bang showdown. (Movie's on YouTube.) THE ONE MAN JURY How exciting Ms. Hay appeared in Playboy, as the thread revealed. Alexandra was at the game for little over a decade, and then quit when only thirty-four. The lovely lass died of heart disease at the painfully youthful age of forty-six. . |
