Yes, under-investment in your own nationals is indeed a problem. This is why other countries have a surplus of qualified people and you have the opposite

Let's hope it improves

Default Welcome to Trumpton

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43899603

It seems that US farmers (meaning multi-billion dollar agri-businesses rather than genuine farmers I'll bet) see the possible free trade deal between the USA and Britain as a Trojan Horse.

Quote:
US farmers say chlorine-washed chicken should be part of a UK free trade deal
Chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-injected beef should be part of a UK/US free trade deal, a farming union said.

Roger Johnson, president of America's National Farmers Union, said US food was "perfectly safe" and there had been a lot of "fear-mongering".

The politically-influential union represents more than 200,000 US farms.
[snip]
With the UK due to leave the EU and the single market and the government planning to quit the customs union, the UK will able to sign free trade deals with other countries, including America.

"I would not argue that it is a lower standard, I would argue it's a different standard," Mr Johnson American National Farmers Union spokesman told me about the different scientific approaches on either side of the Atlantic.

He said that America was more "risk-tolerant": "I think it is fair to say that the standards that we follow allow for more rapid scientific advancement, that a more cautionary approach [from the EU] means that scientific advances are going to happen more slowly.
I wonder if it is Americans who are "more risk tolerant" or if it is people in positions of authority in the US government who think it is OK if Americans glow in the dark, provided this adds an extra 1% toi the bottom line?

The EU have been trying to sell British peoples' bottom holes in public toilets on this issue via the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Chlorinated chicken, hormone injected beef, GM crops were all to be allowed, followed no doubt by Britain legalising automatic weapons to eliminate unfair non-tariff barriers suffered by Colt and other weapons manufacturers.

It rather seems as though Dr Liam Fox sees the future for the British nation as rent-boys. I hope he ends up like his name-sake in the Engllish Fairy Tales.

Quote:
"I dreamed," said Lady Mary, "that I went yestermorn to your castle, and I found it in the woods, with high walls, and a deep moat, and over the gateway was written:

Be bold, be bold.

"But it is not so, nor it was not so," said Mr. Fox.

"And when I came to the doorway, over it was written:

Be bold, be bold, but not too bold.

"It is not so, nor it was not so," said Mr, Fox.

"And then I went upstairs, and came to a gallery, at the end of which was a door, on which was written:

Be bold, be bold, but not too bold,
Lest that your heart's blood should run cold.

"It is not so, nor it was not so," said Mr. Fox.

"And then—and then I opened the door, and the room was filled with bodies and skeletons of poor dead women, all stained with their blood."

"It is not so, nor it was not so. And God forbid it should be so," said Mr. Fox.

"I then dreamed that I rushed down the gallery, and just as I was going down the stairs, I saw you, Mr. Fox, coming up to the hall door, dragging after you a poor young lady, rich and beautiful."

"It is not so, nor it was not so. And God forbid it should be so," said Mr. Fox.

"I rushed downstairs, just in time to hide myself behind a cask, when you, Mr. Fox, came in dragging the young lady by the arm. And, as you passed me, Mr. Fox, I thought I saw you try and get off her diamond ring, and when you could not, Mr. Fox, it seemed to me in my dream, that you out with your sword and hacked off the poor lady's hand to get the ring."

"It is not so, nor it was not so. And God forbid it should be so," said Mr. Fox, and was going to say something else as he rose from his seat, when Lady Mary cried out "But it is so, and it was so. Here's hand and ring I have to show," and pulled out the lady's hand from her dress, and pointed it straight at Mr. Fox.

At once her brothers and her friends drew their swords and cut Mr. Fox into a thousand pieces.
If this is the free trade deal we are to be offered, I would like Liam Fox to be turned into oxo cubes just like the villain in the story and Mr Trump and his administration to be told to ESAD as the kids say nowadays.

Destroying the myth that the EU needs the UK more than the Brits need the EU: "The EU27 accounts for around 50 per cent of UK export and imports, while the UK market accounts for 7 per cent of EU exports and 4 per cent of imports."

People I know don't talk such numbers. But they know UK is obstructionist, and note they don't like EU progress. So it would actually be progress for Europe, if UK leaves. No one thought this at first, but now they realise

Oh well...

Not the first time I have seen people mistake change for "progress".

Well, in your case it would be progress if you weren't leaving. For one thing you'd get more democracy, which you definitely lack with hereditary monarchy, unelected HoL and parliament elected by FPTP. You'd also get better law, without justice system being influenced by politicians

Not to mention the bunch of bureaucracy the EU pools, which you'll have to create or expand for yourselves now. Or the many trade deals you'll lose, and have almost no qualified people to replace them -- that one will hurt you, unless you get smart

From where I live, I welcome an EU superstate. All I ask is that we can't be dragged into a war, and that we have sufficient control over our own economy

That might be asking too much if you belong to the Eurozone. Your fiscal policies will be subject to the approval of the European Central Bank. Quantitative easing? Forget it. Reflationary measures or demand management? No chance. You can still have high government spending, but not on anything which might possibly benefit you.

I will wish you joy of your new European superstate, but in the words of Samuel Goldwyn:
