I certainly don't think your posting was harsh or ungrateful, NIN ... it was well-balanced and very fair.

Like many others here, I too have experienced the ravages of food poisoning, although I've no idea what caused it. I do remember fainting in the bathroom, then staying very close to the toilet as I was puking and crapping my brains out at irregular intervals with next to no warning! By the time I got everything out of my system, I literally felt as though I'd been filleted!

I'm now very careful with certain foods and try to minimise the time between buying high-risk, chilled or frozen foods, and getting them into the fridge or freezer. I actually have a 12V cooler-box in the car which I use to transport stuff home, and will always make sure I buy those types of products right at the end of any shopping trip.

Low-risk products are a different matter and the bb date means very little!

I suppose at sometime in our lives we will all poison our bodies with food. But it tends to be meat/fiish etc. Not cans of beans. Though they can be nasty!

I adore those adverts for natural water, claiming to come from glaciers dating back to the ice age, running through mountain streams for several milennia.

Then why does the bottle have a use by date!

What gets me is the price of bottled water. Go to a budget supermarket and you can buy it for a few pence. But any fancy stuff the "stars" quaff is through the roof it's water guys, yes that stuff you drink at dawn when the booze is wearing off.

You're supposed to drink water when the booze is wearing off???

I always thought it was more booze.

You must keep hydrated I used to love beer for breakfast. 3 pints and I was ready for anything.

Since I'm single I don't have that much trouble with food going past it's expiration date. I only keep around what I'm going to use within the next couple of weeks.

I do sometimes get close with certain perishables such as milk. I will drink milk on it's expiration date but not past that. I only buy a half gallon at a time to keep from wasting any.

I used to sometimes have a problem with bread getting close but since I now live only about 500 yards away from where I work, I come home for lunch most every day.

Milk is something I most certainlly use the smell test on. I will chuck it even before its expiration date if it smells funky.

unless its got lumps in it and doesnt taste sour its good to go. Though i drink my tea/coffeee black. With bread i make my own so i know it has to be eaten within the day or next if stored properly. Not cos its bad just cos it goes rubbish.

Milk, cheese, yoghurt, cream, double cream (heavy cream) are all eaten by me many days beyond the use by date if they still smell OK and have been stored in my stock fridge which runs at a constant 2.5c.

I have eaten Muller yoghurts over a month after the use by date.

Best before? meh if its bread and its isnt mouldy then It will get toasted.

If it doesnt have fur on it then it gets eaten

The only thing that I do stick to the numbers on is cooked meats and pies or pasties, which have a consume before date. Cooked foods that are not going to be cooked through are the risk items.

Other risk items include bean sprouts and rice that you have cooked yourself and then placed leftoevers in the fridge. I allow 2 days on cold rice but if frozen I will give it a full month and then use for fried rice etc.

I have never had food poisoning eating the food that Mrs db makes for us.

Medicines, pharmaceuticals including GSL and OTC. Asprin does goes off but it can be smelled straight away if its oxidised.

For meds always store in airtight jars in a cold and dry place awy from sunlight and moisture and they are ok at least a year after the use by date. Meds left opened in hot and steamy bathrooms will not make it safely to the printed date on the label, let alone beyond this date.

Cream and potions for topical use if treated hygenically, ie caps wiped and no spill left to fester on the outside of the tube, I will use these up to a year after the use by date. I am using some Cavilon cream which is two years out of date and it is still perfectly ok for me.
