May 'They'll be no running commentary!' Remember those days
'Just let her get with on it!' with no idea about what 'it' really is. Her 'tough guy' speech was laughable to everyone except the dumb Pro-Brexit tabloid press to whom it was aimed at. The only way May has kept going as long as she has is by remaining as vague as possible for as long as possible 'Brexit means Brexit' etc. Anyone with half a brain could see this was inevitable. As soon as she tried to put any meat on the bare bones she was doomed to failure due to her own and the EU's red lines. The woman is all bluster and the EU knows as she has always done she will cave in at the first sign of pressure. They know she will eventually sign up an effective Customs Union/EEA or Parliament will take the decision for her. All this nonsense about the 'Will of the People' when only about 12% actually support her totally flawed 'Chequers plan'. Last edited by vinceprince; September 22nd, 2018 at 08:33 AM.. |

I would very much prefer to leave the EU with no deal whatsoever than to "leave" under the Chequers Plan, in which we would apparently have a common customs rule book and no say in what the EU rule are, although a duty to enforce them no matter what they are. As far as I am concerned, any settlement which includes conceding the free movement of labour is anathema and must not be tolerated.
There is no point in leaving the EU unless you really go. That has always been my view, and that is why I found the moment of decision extremely hard and extremely bitter - it was by far the most significant vote I have ever taken part in. Having voted and decided, and having been in the majority in the vote, I am absolutely determined to see this through - and this does not mean doing as we are told by the EU. That was the whole point of voting to leave. Actions have consequences. The action of leaving the EU has consequences. The Chequers Plan is all about trying to avoid the consequences by not accepting the logic of the decision and the action of leaving. It is a pack of nonsense and the EU leaders are saying so - and for a change I agree with them. I have never denied that they too have a point of view and deserve to be listened to - I only get angry when they try to victimise us for leaving, and that's not what is going on here. Sorry, but I find my patience is getting thin with all the Project Fear rubbish and the sniveling cowardice of the May administration. It would have been much better if the Tories had sacked May after the election she so comically bungled, and appointed someone with some spine, who actually believes conceptually that Britain is correct to be leaving -preferably someone with some genuine ability rather than a brash phony like Boris Johnson, liable to say any shit bucket stupid thing that passes through his head. We should be getting on with negotiating a free trade deal, not wasting our time on crap which we knew all along that the EU would not be willing to accept, but which is intended to minimise internal discord in the Tory Party.

But it's also almost certainly true that few want to take over a train-wreck as it happens, and be seen responsible for it |

I think the most obvious replacement for Mrs May, given that the country is trying to leave the EU, would probably be David Davies. He maintains his composure under difficulty and pressure, whereas we saw in the 2017 election campaign how quickly Mrs May gets rattled and loses her cool as soon as the going gets tough. The main problem with Davies is that he is like Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army; absolutely bone idle lazy. But he stays calm when people try to panic him, and that is what is needed at present. Also he is serious about wanting Britain to actually leave the EU - Theresa May patently isn't. But if you are asking a country which has fought world wars and faced genuine existential threats without losing bowel control to be frightened because Theresa May is the current serving PM, don't go holding your breath, will you?

As Scounds says David Davies is probably the best choice, one thing is for sure there is no one in either the Labour party or those bleating wet lettuce Liberal type thingies that is even remotely anywhere near capable.

It's a mutual feeling palo. You would struggle finding a Eurocrat that any of the Leave voters do not distrust and several of them we despise. Their duplicitous words have been stated here many times, the EU project is more important to them than the people they are supposed to represent. I therefore don't give a toss what those tossers think about us or our politicians. "If it's a Yes, we will say 'on we go', and if it's a No we will say 'we continue'." "Britain is different. Of course there will be transfers of sovereignty. But would I be intelligent to draw the attention of public opinion to this fact?" "Monetary policy is a serious issue. We should discuss this in secret, in the Eurogroup [...] I'm ready to be insulted as being insufficiently democratic, but I want to be serious [...] I am for secret, dark debates." The quicker we get out the better and let's start to find our own place in the world again
