Text from her 1973 Pictorial
LUND OF PLENTY “I THINK IT WOULD BE IDEAL TO LIVE WITH A MAN AND A WOMAN PROVIDING I DUG THEM BOTH AND THEY DIDN’T DIG EACH OTHER” Avril Lund. Sensitive, green-eyed, 22 year old ex-Dublinite. Stand 5’7” in her bare feet and measures a disquieting 40-24-36½. Loves people. Especially Men. Complains bitterly about the natural inadequacies of social relationships. “People are islands after all.” Her logic is simplistic, almost ruthless. Intellectually reminiscent of other dissident generations. The Lost and the Beat. “We are all self-contained beings. Pokey. Little human islands surrounded on four sides by indifference. The fact that we need each other doesn’t make us any closer. It simply proves how very insular we really are!” Avril cares. “Being yourself is a state of mind. My life style is the vision I have of myself. Not what I do! I develop my own friends for my own reasons. Social values…I mean traditional social values are mostly nonsense. I go where I want. I do what I want. I have my own ethic for living and it’s very agreeable, doesn’t hurt anybody and it works for me. “I love men. I mean I really love men and I can’t live without them. The more insular you are the more you need the closeness and interdependency that love and sex provide. The right man could make me jump through a hoop backwards. He has to be tall, long-haired, slim, not too good-looking, strong-willed, and not over-considerate. I don’t like the constant, non-stop gentleman. I prefer to be roughed up. Not too much. Just so I know who the boss is. When I fall in love, I’m going to need him all the time. At least in the beginning. But I won’t make the mistake of trying to merge my life with his. Not entirely. We should each keep a little of our own identity. Between the ages of 15 and 17, a younger, more conformist Miss Lund taught Sunday school in Dublin, lived at home, lost her virginity and matriculated, earlier than most with honors in art. She took a job waitressing on the Isle of Man to finance a three-month hitch-hiking tour of Europe. Saw Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France before concluding that the natural wonders of England and Ireland were no less deficient and that Englishmen, at least, were more tolerable companions than their continental counterparts. European men are vain, pushy and overwhelmingly self-confident. I don’t trust superlative personality traits in anyone. If you don’t jump in bed with them five minutes after your first meeting they think you’re crazy. British and American men are a lot more natural, better mannered and have the interesting quality of being imperfect lovers. Her brief odyssey terminated in Brighton where she took up a career in psychiatric nursing. “I qualified after three years. It was tough going and I decided that nursing – for all its moral and spiritual rewards – wasn’t for me. I couldn’t accustom myself to the proper rules of deportment with psychiatric patients. When they hit you you’re not supposed to hit back. I did! I found them funny or hateful and sometimes I found them sad. But I was never indifferent to them and that’s the way you’re supposed to be. “Perhaps I’m a little neurotic myself. I’m never quite sure what I want to do. I love to sing and play the guitar. I’m self-taught. Not a very good guitarist but good enough to accompany myself singing. I tried playing in a pub at the Western Hotel in Hove for almost a month. I and another boy. We worked nights and I earned about five pounds or the equivalent of 12 dollars a week. I even did a 20-minute show on Radio Brighton. It was fun but I had no interest in pursuing it professionally. I’m just not dedicated enough to starve”. Michael Parker, a Brighton photographer cum model agent, met Avril during her last gig at the Western and convinced her to try modeling. “Didn’t get many jobs but Michael gave me extra work helping out around the studio. One day we did a few nudes. Just for kicks. Michael liked them and sent a selection to Penthouse. I guess that did it. Bob Guccione asked me up to London and the next thing I knew we were on our way to the Caribbean. Never dreamed it would happen like that. Funny part is I used to read Penthouse regularly. I liked looking at other girls in the nude. I don’t know if it’s kink or not but a really beautiful woman turns me on. It’s different with men. I can fancy a woman and get terrific satisfaction out of just looking at her. I prefer tall, slim, small-breasted women with long, bushy hair and long, long legs. I think it would be ideal to live with a man and a woman providing I dug them both and they didn’t dig each other. I like to be the center of interest. I suppose it’s only natural-like my island syndrome-you start off all alone and soon you realize how much you need other people around you.” It would be difficult, with or without benefit of her personal philosophy, to imagine Avril very far from the center of anyone’s attention. She occupies-as human islands go-a lush and paradisiacal place in the sun. A Lund-to be exact-of plenty. 0->>> |
